One thing I need to be absolutely clear about : this is a 34" scale 5-string, which is the exception to the Roscoe rule rather than the norm. There's nothing wrong with the B string on this one, though, it booms quite nicely and clearly! Roscoe Century 3005 J (XQM, SPH, 34") |

34"?!?!?
Well at least it is the gloss finish that I don't like.
oh wait... |

1. What made you opt for some 34" action, if you don't mind sharing?2
2. What in all hell is taking so long for sound clips? |

oh wait... | I was actually thinking about you as I wrote that note about the 34" scale. I was wondering how long it would take for my phone to ring? |

Gard mentioned it in passing on the phone yesterday, and I asked him to send me some pics. It took about 0.2 seconds for me to say "ship it!".
And I'm thumbing through my Real Book as we speak looking for something fun to record. I still don't sight read well, so it could take a while longer. |

Did that last night at the jam. Last Sat we did a trio thing where we stretched out. Did a number of TV themes and Beatles tunes. I now want to work up an arrangement of Dear Prudence in 7 or 9.
Also, Loony Tunes music is awesome for small group...

Greg you might be shipping another one to Aus soon! |

That said - if you do find yourself really wanting this bass - I can probably work out a deal with the local Australian Roscoe dealer where we split the sale. I've done that with the Canadian Roscoe dealer (Club Bass) several times, and it's pretty painless. |

I was going for a Purdie Shuffle, but I dare say I fell a little short. Man, his groove is crazy good and complicated.
On top of that, I'm not having the greatest playing day ever. I think the drum programming took a lot of my enthusiasm today. Oh, well, it's turned out OK, and it will still do a fine job of letting you hear this bass! "All Blues" (Complete Mix) "All Blues" (Bass - Both PUPs, slapped) "All Blues" (Chords, Bridge PUP) "All Blues" (Intro, Neck PUP) "All Blues" (Melody, Both PUPs)

This dude breaks down the Purdie Shuffle so easily that I was able to program it up in about 10 minutes once I knew what was going on. It's deceptively simple. It sounds like there's a lot going on, but it's all fairly steady, simple rudiments that just sound great against each other when they're played on different instruments (high hat, snare & kick).
Here's my quick & dirty drum program based on that explanation. Man alive, it sounds so much funkier than what I came up with on my own! Now I've got my second wind, I'll probably re-record the whole thing. Yeah, I'm manic like that... "Purdie Shuffle ala Bump" |

Sheesh, I got way too into this project once I uncovered the secrets of the Purdie Shuffle. I re-recorded the entire tune, and it is soooooo much better now. THIS is what I envisioned when I left the other night planning to play "All Blues" as a shuffle.
Here's the final mix and the individual tracks. As usual, I recorded the bass part direct through my REDDI tube DI. In the final mix, I used every tool at my disposal (EQ, compression, FX, panning, etc.) to make the final mix sound as good as I can make it. But all that stuff is removed when I publish the individual tracks.
So without further ado... "All Blues - Take 2" (Complete Mix) "All Blues - Take 2" (Bass Line) "All Blues - Take 2" (Chords) "All Blues - Take 2" (Leads)
The bass line is straightforward root pounding, but the rest of the bass parts are fairly musical (thanks for the inspiration, Miles!). I hit upon a mix of all the bass parts (other than the bass line) by accident, and it sounded so good I decided to share it, too. The chords, the melody and the harmony all weave together quite beautifully (if I do say so myself). "All Blues - Take 2" (The More Musical Bass Parts)
I didn't expect this project to require much learning since I've known this song for a long time... but that shuffle beat really took some figuring out, and then I spent quite a bit of time trying to make the harmonic stuff as interesting as the beat. Hopefully that worked out.
Enjoy!

Props again for the bass orchestra thing. I just don't have the patience. I'm lucky if I can just get through the song with a band playing the bass line before getting distracted by something shiny... |

I tried to program them by ear, and it was just way too busy. A "proper" Purdie Shuffle sounds fairly busy, but it's not... I knew it wasn't right, and that negativity can be heard in the bass playing in take 1... |

FWIW, here's the absolute master class on the progress chart of that shuffle: Rosanna's Shuffle - YouTube
RIP Jeff Porcaro. To this day I draw new inspiration from his playing. |
