Actually, if you look carefully at where the witness point is, it's about identical to the pickup location on a Gibson guitar - the bridge is pretty wide.

So, are players preferring the P/U selector at the control knob location now days (in lieu of on the upper horn)?

Well, it's kinda like training wheels, they start with the little wimpy strings, then they graduate to the big boy strings after a while.
