This thing is frickin' black magic for direct bass tone. I can't believe I don't sell one of these each week?!? |

And I love that the melody was ahead of the beat, to make it sound like the hand claps were behind. Genius. (Whether or not you were trying for that effect...genius.) |

Of course, you know this really just comfirms what the rest of us already know....
You need a six-string in your fleet. You've got too sweet a sense of melody, and too strong a grasp of harmony, not to have one.
So, in conclusion. Folks, buy this bass. If for no other reason than so Greg can fund one of his own. |

| | | | Hey Guy's!
I am the original owner of the bass and it is awesome! It sounds awesome and plays very easily. It was my first 6 string and I am not going back!
In my mind, I try to create "good instrument karma". If I buy a bass that has good attributes and some that I can't deal with, I pass it on. I just might be perfect for someone else! The case with this bass is the Century body is too long for me (insert joke) and I love 20mm string spacing.
If anyone out there is looking to get an inexpensive, stupid light, easy playing, great sounding first (or second...) 6'er. Do it, do it! |

(Greg, as always, BRILLIANT stuff, and Jerry's right, you really should have a 6er...you deserve one far more than me, and I've got TWO )

If I buy a bass that I don't see myself playing all the time, I pass it along because basses are made to be played and it just might be someone else' s dream bass! "Bass Karma" is the way I think of it. This was one step to instrument Nirvana. Sorry for getting all metaphysical on you's. |

I usually try to do these clips the way I hear them in my head, I don't like to reference the source material too closely before I do the recording. That tests my ear and generally exposes issues with the way I hear/understand things. There were two glaring errors that I made while recording this clip, and I think both are valuable lessons for everyone:
1) With the horn stabs in the second verse, you can hear in the first mix that I was putting them on every 2 and 4. After listening to the Blues Bros version, I discovered they're really just on the & of 4. Obviously, the Blue Bros way is much, much, much more hip. Make it funkay!!! That's been fixed in this second mix.
2) On my first crack at the bridge, I programmed the drums and played the bass and chords parts from memory, no reference at all. Then I got down to trying to play the melody part, and I spent 2-3 hours trying to figure it out. I kept getting really close except for the very last part of it. I finally dug up the Blue Bros version, and I discovered there are 5 measures in the bridge instead of the 4 measures that I had programmed from memory. I learned this same lesson with "Away in A Manger", too, but it obviously didn't stick. Note to self: when there's a big setup for a modulation, there's often an odd measure thrown in! Count that stuff carefully BEFORE programming the drums!!
So here's the final mix! "Soul Man" (Sam & Dave, The Blue Brothers)
And here are the naked bass tracks with all the FX (EQ, compression, etc.) removed. "Soul Man" (Vox, Horns & Chords) "Soul Man" (Bassline)

I've been watching all this old Stax stuff on youtube today. Duck Dunn and Steve Cropper were babies back then, but they were playing some absolutely KILLER stuff behind so many iconic front men (Sam & Dave, Otis Redding, Albert King, Rufus Thomas, etc.).
I'm looking at my in-depth treatments of all these cover tunes as a big research project. What are some of the cools things that I've been hearing all these years without really understanding how to create them? Once I get enough of these under my belt... gulp... I might be ready to try creating something cool of my own... we'll see! |

I have quit my gigging bands and need something new to do so I was debating trying to be a Todd Johnson chordal style of player. gotta have a 6 to do that. | | Thread Tools | Search this Thread | | | |
