My 'ol homebrew explorer bass has almost as good access, but only 20 frets. Quote:

This is a great clip with the bass audio isolated. John’s genius and the power of this instrument are on full display. Since it’s a bass-only audio feed, fast forward to the 1:25 mark. That’s when John starts to open this bad-boy up. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3Lf10...layer_embedded
Edit: yeah his alembic, wups!

I think that's actually an Alembic, though, but it's obviously the same sort of bass styling. Anyone know which came first? John's Alembics, or John's Warwicks? I'm guessing the Alembics.
I heard a funny story about his Alembics. They apparently required an outboard power supply to make the active electronics work, so he had to have a special cable and whatnot to get any output from the bass. He was backstage at Live Aid getting ready to perform in front of millions, and he couldn't tune his bass because his rig with the outboard power supply in it was onstage. So he spent the first song or two of the performance trying to get his bass in tune, and it must have been a nightmare. He was finished with Alembic after that, so I imagine he then got in contact with Warwick to recreate a similar look and sound. |

He had the Alembic Explorers, moved to Warwick, designed the Buzzard with Hanz Peter Wilfer(I think thats his name, Warwick boss), had some issues with the necks, IIRC, and went to Status, to build the carbon ones. Quote:
