New Arrivals From Mike Lull - 6/10/2011

We've received our first three basse from Mike Lull! I haven't had a chance to spend a lot of time with them, but I did plug them each in enough to give them a quick listen. Very nice tone in the Fender vein for sure, and the necks are really comfortable. I like 'em!

Please don't hold me to the specs you see on my site just yet. I'm checking with Lull on some of the body wood and electronics details.

M4V - Caramel Burst **SOLD**

M4V - Candy Apple Red

M5 - Honey Burst

Thumbs up

Very nice looking basses! I especially like that caramel burst 4.

Not a bad price either!

Outstanding! Right on, Greg. I loves me some Lull action. That CAR four-stringer is a Cadillac! Lovin' the LPB guitar as well.

FWIW, I'll bet a bottle of Bud Light that both burst basses are ash, and the CAR one is alder.

Love that camel burst. 2 questions. How would you compare the 5 string to the Tuttle? And, what is the round silver thing on the back of the 5 string?

String through body for the low B.

Can I asume that it's a 34" scale? String through body in that case should help with feel and definition.

35"

I don't think he offers 34" for 5ers, but I may be wrong.

Yep, Mike's five-string basses are 35". But, just as with Roscoe...you have to really be sensitive to notice it. Playability is superb.

Having played the Tuttle, and having played many of Mike's M basses, I'll suggest that the Lull is more "organic" sounding - you really get a flavor of the woods - and that it's much closer in tone to a Fender than the Tuttle. In general, I prefer Mike's MxV offerings (i.e. no top, 21 frets), but if you want a 24-fret J bass with a nice top, you'll be pressed to find a better value.

That's interesting.

I can't remember what pre-amp the Tuttle had, but it did have the very powerful sounding Barden pickups. Might make the wood a less important factor.

Yep, the Tuttle sounds more like King Koa than a Fender, and I certianly attribute that to the Bardens that are in both basses. That said, Mike Tuttle is happy to work with whatever electronics, I just prodded him to make the first two with Bardens. I'll spread the love with Tuttle by asking him to also build some basses with more traditional sounding pickups.

These Lulls have the Fender sound nailed (dare I say improved upon? A little more muscular perhaps, but very much that Fender J tone). Think Marcus Miller.

I've got a set of Nordstrand pole-based J pickups on order for Kong Koa. I think that will take me more in this traditional J-Bass tone direction (or at least, that is my hope!).

I'm definitely interested to see how that works out with King Koa. The Bardens, while excellent sounding, are very, very modern sounding, and you do seem to be after more vintage tone.

It's in there with the neck stuff... frets, radius, nut width and scale are all on the same line... I could probably make that more clear...

It's right there in the neck features.

Whoops. Greg got there first.
