Nah, recovering from that wind storm has eaten up most of my spare time. Lots of chain sawing and picking up sticks instead of working on the building.

Yeah, clean up can suck. Lots of wood for fires and marshmallows and stuff though, right?

Confession time. We haven't done squat here since the Jimmy Haslip clinic back in June. I haven't even wanted to think about the building until we paid some of the bills that we ran up leading up to that clinic. We're doing OK on that front, and Danny is chomping at the bit to get going again... so I broke out some tools today and got started on the trim in the showroom. Yeah!!!

We've got two corners at the front of the showroom (one at each end of the wall with all the windows in it). Both of those corners are little buggers because there is steelwork from the shell building protruding through the drywall ever so slightly. In other words, we couldn't cover that metal up with drywall because it pokes through just proud of the drywall. So the drywall guys drywalled around it, leaving me with two problems to solve in trim. My plan is to make a couple boxes out of oak to cover that mess up and really dress up these two corners. I started today at the corner by the front door.

There's not a lot of progress to show just yet. Most of my time today was spent cleaning up my garage at home. That's where all my serious wood working tools reside. I needed to use my jointer to make a flat, straight edge on a 2x4... but first I had to dig through 5 years worth of "oh, I'll just set this here for a little while" clutter. My garge was so well organized as a wood shop when I was making amps back then!! Dang, but today I could barely even see the jointer when I went looking for it. And it's a mother of a jointer, too, a big 13" model!!

Oh, well. The jointer is now accessible again, and I was able to get the 2x4 the way I needed it before the end of the day. So I came back to the store and put it up. This was a bit of a trick, attaching a 2x4 to brickwork. A masonry bit, some tapcon screws, a little Liquid Nails, and 10 or trips up and down the ladder got my first board in place. And it's actually plumb! I'll let that adhesive setup overnight, and then tomorrow I'll add a couple more 2x4's to finish the rough inner box that I'll use to make mounting my pretty oak outer box easier.

If I have any energy left when I get home this evening, I plan to dig out my table saw and my dual drum sander. That'll let me prep the oak boards so I can make the decorative outer box. Heck, I might even get that glued up tonight if I'm really feeling adventurous...

Here's how the corner looked when I started. There's a brick pillar to the right of the door that runs parallel with the window wall. Perpendicular to that pillar, there's an air cavity filled with foam insulation and there's a little strip of metal that runs floor to ceiling right at the edge of the drywall. My oak box will eventually cover up all of that mess.

And here it is with the first board set firmly in place. Not bad for a day's work? 1 board up? Man, I'm glad I don't get paid by the board!!

Of course, that'd entirely depend on *how much* you'd get paid per board.

I spent some quality time in the woodshop this weekend, and this morning I was able to install the first piece of trim in the new showroom! Yippee!! It still needs some walnut plugs, some baseboard molding and some shoe molding... but this is as far as I'll get today. It's time to start setting up for the Bryan Beller clinic tonight (double yippee!!!). I love my life.

So last update I was building a "rough" box from 2x4 material to which I would mount the "finished" box made of oak and walnut. So here's the completed "rough" box.

Most of my time this weekend, though, was spent making the "finished" box. At 10' tall and made entirely of hardwood, it ain't light. It was a bit of a chore working with boards this size, but the results are worth it. I hit it with some water last night to raise the grain, and it's like those photos Gard posts where the wood just comes to life when you wet it. I can't wait to hit this with some finish once we get a bit further along.

Here's a closeup of the finished box. The oak is really gorgeous. It was quartersawn by Danny's brother from a tree that grew on their father's land. It's got rays shooting all through it, it's really nicely figured. Same story on the walnut, although it wasn't quartersawn. The walnut has some nice streaking in it that should really pop when the finish hits it.

Danny and I spent today running around SW Virginia buying lumber for the showroom. We need a ton of walnut for the hanging of guitars, and we need a bunch of cherry to build a bar sort of thing for our cash register setup. 160 bf of walnut & 250 bf of cherry stuffed in a 1.5 ton trailer looks like this:

This is raw lumber as it came off the saw mill (after a bit of drying). I've got a ton of work to do to get this prepped and cut to size for our purposes... but we are now officially out of excuses!! "Lack of lumber" is no longer a valid reason for us to do nothing.

Oh!! THIS is why I'm so tired...

Danny just got here (just in time to miss all the stacking fun!), and we're gonna head to my place now to start milling the walnut! Hopefully we'll get some of this material up on the walls later this week or early the next...

Be careful Greg, with all that wood working one is bound to get "Blisters on my fingers!"

* Sorry, band is getting ready to do a cool Halloween gig and we will be performing a whole Beatles set, in costume. I have been digging the old songs.....ah, the memories...

My sander's been down for a few weeks now, so I haven't made much progress on the trim and the instrument hangers. Order some parts, discover I need more parts, order parts, blah, blah, blah. Bummer.

Buuuuuut - that hasn't stopped us. We ordered a couple doors, and we got the first one installed not too long ago. Here's the set of double doors that leads from the showroom into the warehouse. A little trim, a little paint, a little hardware, and then that project will be done. Sigh... someday.

The more exciting project has been the stairs. The existing stairs were covered in the same ceramic tile that's in the waiting room area. We wanted to cover that up with wood to beautify the steps a bit. Danny created some thin panels using some excess oak flooring material and some walnut trim. He glued that to the existing steps, and it turned out superbly. I did some sanding on it today, and then I put the first coat of finish on the new steps. A litttle more finish, some small trim pieces, and then this little project will also be done.

This was a major obstacle to us getting the trim going because we didn't know what the trim would be interfacing with at these stairs. Now that they're done, we should be able to knock the showroom trim out fairly quickly (1-3 months, depending on how much free time we can find to actually work on it). Once I get my sander running again, that is...
