Just when I think I'm starting to do some pretty hip clips... Danny drops this one on me! He asked me this morning if I felt like doing some "producing" today. That usually means that he's laid a bunch of cool tracks, but he doesn't want to sift through them to prune the good from the bad.

Sure enough - he's written a very cool tune & laid some very nice stuff down. So it was just a question of me pruning & putting it all together, adding an appropriate bass line, and then futzing with panning & effects for a few hours.
The song is very much autobigraphical. Danny was born not far from here near Huntington, WV, although he spent his formative years in the DC area (Fairfax, VA). His dad was a security officer for the C&O railroad when they lived in WV, but he later joined the Secret Service and moved the family near DC. Danny wrote this one to give to his Dad for Christmas this year.
I'm not sure what style I'd call this. Country Blues?!? Folk Music?!? Whatever it is, it's Danny's usual blend of acoustic instruments (guitar, dobro & mandolin on this one), rootsy playing & gloriously harmonized vocals.

I used our latest Mike Lull arrival to record the bass line. It's
this lovely Lull M4V, and I recorded it direct using
my REDDI tube DI by A-Designs. It's a palm muted part, so it doesn't really show off the bass's tone very well. Sorry about that! Still, the bass sounds pretty darn nice! I used a slight neck pickup bias and a mild bass boost.
