For some strange reason (TBA...or not ), I've spent a lot of time today at the Welcome to John Suhr Guitars, Basses, and Amps - Expanding the Experience of Tone! website. Anyway, I made my way over to the audio files, and was absolutely knocked out by Guthrie Govan's stuff, recorded during a Suhr clinic in San Francisco, on July January 21, 2011.
Obviously the guy is a guitar freak, but what did it for me was the bass player...this fellow is ridiculous....partiuclarly on Red Baron, which is one of my alltime favorite jam tunes. To wit: http://www.suhrguitars.com/downloads...n/redbaron.mp3
So, my question. Anyone know who's on bass? I've gone some googling and youtubing, but haven't had any luck. There is a youtube clip of a great bass player on another tune captured at this event: Guthrie Govan at a Suhr Clinic in San Francisco - Wonderful Slippery Thing - YouTube
I'd guess this is the same guy, but I don't recognize him. Another clue...the band did a gig @ Biscuits & Blues that same night, which is a great club near downtown. I've found lots of archived stuff from that show, but no information on the band members.
On the album, 'Erotic Cakes,' it was Guthrie's brother, Seth, on bass. Could be him, I suppose, but based on the cuts from that album that I've heard, it doesn't necessarily sound like him...nor does the fellow in the youtube vid above look like him. Similar logic...it's obviously not Bryan Beller, although there are certainly some sonic and stylistic similarities there. Argh.
Help folks! I'd love to study and enjoy more of this guy's playing.

Ed Yoon (who used to manage sales at Suhr) recently left the company to manage Guthrie. I'm sure he can tell me who's playing bass. I'm loving that MP3 - whoever mixed that is obviously a bass fan (and that's alright by me!). |

Big typo on my end - my apologies. The clinic was in January, not July. Doh!
The sound quality on those clips is amazing, and if you navigate the traditional route through Suhr's site, you can dowload even higher quality .m4a files. The bass tone is HUGE, and the player is just fantastic.
And...duh...I'm really becoming a fan of Guthrie's playing. Pyrotechnics aside, his phrasing, dynamics, and harmomic vocabulary are incredible. Even though the differences are stronger than the similarities, he reminds me so much of Scott Henderson, particularly in how he sets you up for something and then, just as you settle in, he pulls the rug out from under you. That, and any brother who quotes Summertime within Red Baron is just wicked cool. |

I've become quite the Govan fan myself and after a bit of snooping around I finally turned to iTunes of all things and lo and behold there are two versions of Fives up there. The bassist for the better sounding version is Tal Wilkenfeld. The other I'm not sure of yet but, I'm still searching for that info.. Now I just gotta get my grubby mitts on a copy of Erotic Cakes and read the credits to confirm all that. He is now in a new band "The Aristocrats" A fusion power trio that just flat out kicks serious ass. It features Bryan Beller on bass and Marco Minnermann on drums. Do check it out. The Aristocrats

Google Seth and you'll get some info including a discography and a couple threads right here on talkbass.. From what I've read, he's pretty much on the same level as his brother Guthrie, (which does make sense) and is considered a much underrated, and for some reason unknown bass phenom.
Beller didn't play or record with Guthrie until the Aristocrats, so no gold star there... |

Mr. Bump - have / would you consider contacting Mike Pedulla to sell his basses? They are mighty fine, I reckon |

I've only played a few in my life, but none really grabbed me. I'd need to play a few good ones before I pursued them in a real way.
The good news is we have no money to add new lines right now (thanks, new building!!), so the question is moot. |

Heck, you can go to Guitar Center online to buy a Pedulla, right? |
