Niiiice! Now that's killin' Jazz tone.

I don't think I'd go messing with it, but I suppose you need an excuse to fit them Delanos in the King...

Here's a better clip of my new Lull M5V (originally posted in the "Real Book Fun!!" thread).

Why the piano part? Bass chords ftw

You did inspire me to give this a go. I'll have to see if I can figure out some voicings that work. This tune is in our regular rotation at gigs.

If this were a 6, yeah... on a 5, it was just a muddled mess.

I can't count that high. That's why I'm pondering a 5'er strung E-C

That's probably why I spend most of my time tuned E-C....

*looks at 6er*

What the hell would I do with all of them...

I pulled out the realbook - I certainly couldn't quickly come up with any voicings that did the song justice. Our keyboard players does a really nice job but he's got more notes and fingers to work with. B@stard...

Sounds great. I DIG the bass.

Chord voicings...on this one, just fill in the blanks. First four chords of the A section...the melody line has that beautiful ascending movement, so avoid that in your upper voicing. But, it leaves you wide open for a sweet descending voicing. Ab (Fm) - G (Em7b5) - Gb (Ebm6) - F (Dbmaj7) with whatever chord tone you'd like underneath. Just avoid the root, as it takes away from the bass line. The next four bars are just a ii-V turnaround, so you can get tight if you'd like (i.e. F&B-natural to E-Bb to cover the G7 - C7 ground).

I hereby sentence all of us to an hour each of Jaco and Victor, lest we forget the harmonic possibilities of the four-string.

Cool, I'll try that. I messed around a bit more with it last night, mostly just sight reading the melody line (I'm way out of practice on that). One of my goals for '12 is to work up some solo arrangements so I can't "cheat" with a looper. I find that a lot harder as I'm used to being able to either play a guitar at the nut or barre chords with melody on top of it.

Nothing practice can't fix. Damn the realities of playing music. Oh, and as of today I "own" (but don't yet possess) four 4-strings and three 5-strings, with one of the 4s and two of the 5s for sale. So evidently I'm committed to the harmonic possibilities of a 4-banger. But I do have 24 frets to deal with...
