So, the question: did you play bass on this one? Specifically, Hell Yes and Go It Alone have awesome bass presence. To quote one of the samples in the former, "I like your bass." |

| | | | No - Hell Yes is SO sick. I think that's BECK, actually!!! I played on a couple of others, don't remember. Go it Alone is Jack White. Killing it!!!

| | | Too many questions, man!
Yes.
Sea Change.
Getting my life back together, and being with my Mom in the hospital since her recent cancer diagnosis.
Of course I'm in touch with Trent & Co., I'm in Nine Inch Nails - we haven't broken up.
Robin Finck is probably eating a bowl of oatmeal right now just like I am.
OK - Rahul, you've maxed out your allotment of questions until 2010.

| | | | Hey Justin, I'm very sorry to hear about your mom's diagnosis. My sister has been fighting Leukemia for 2 years. Cancer is some really evil stuff. I'll keep your mom in my prayers.

Real sorry to hear about what your Mum and family are going through now and the fact that you managed to still get through the rigours of a NIN show is testament to what a true professional you are. The fact that you could be there with your mum during the day and playing at night must've taken its toll physically, let alone the emotional drain that such things take out of you.
I have been through the big C before and it is only with the love and support of those nearest and dearest that makes it all so much easier.
You have been an inspiration to me, even more so since you have started your forum on here and I wish all the best to you and your family during this time. And I'm sure you don't need me to remind you, but make sure you look after yourself too!
ps - excuse my spelling of Mum (MOM), I have from downunder - it's how we spell it here!

Great stuff. Forgot what an absolutely awesome album it was. Even before I'd shifted my focus to bass I recall thinking that the bass work on Sexx laws and Mixed Bizness were inspiring for their funkiness at a time when a good groove seemed to be all but forbidden.
So, yeah. Thanks. |

| | | Thanks, yo! Vultures lives on!
Will evangelize that record all the way to my grave. A fun one.

| | | | hey JMJ
i was listening to sea change this weekend, and i'm curious about how the arrangement for end of the day came about.
was the bassline the last piece that fell into place? as a response/compliment to the drums and the major 7thy guitar part?
or was the bassline one of the first parts to surface, and the guitar and drums were shaped around it?
reason i'm asking is, i'm sitting here trying to think of another bassline that would work there and well......i can't! it all fits together so perfectly...

| | | hmmm....
I think BH was just playing that maj 7 strum and singing me the lyrics, and I just started rocking back and forth on that root - 8, root - 8, root - 7 like the line does. So it all sort of fell into place together. Very simple.
That is one of my favorite songs on that record...and not to big up myself, but I think it's one of the most effective "bass lines" on the record. Very very spare, yet very emotionally functional, a few little fills in there, the times when it goes low are pretty rad, etc. Oops. Guess I big upped myself after all, my bad!
Gadson likewise just sorta started playing along, and I believe Nigel and Beck had some notions of what he could do with the kick pattern.
I'm glad you appreciate that line, thanks so much!
JMJ

| | | | hahaha well big big ups are certainly in order. somehow it is very active, but subtle at the same time. then those stark, monolithic halfnotes on the B section...just what the doc ordered.
