A couple quick questions

Hi Justin. I really dig your approach and your playing and had a few questions I've been wondering about.

1) Who was your favorite opening band? By that I mean, when you were touring with a headlining, which lesser known group sticks out as being the best or most fun act that opened for you? Or who was somebody you didn't really know about that blew you away live?

2) If you had to narrow it to a single album that you feel best represents you as a bass player, which one would it be?

3) What got you into incorporating effects in your playing?

Thanks!

Thank you much, Jared!

1) Of all time? Maybe Cibo Matto, Does It Offend You, Yeah?, Atari Teenage Riot, or The Cardigans.

2) It's kind of a toss up between Sea Change/Midnite Vultures/Ima Robot "Ima Robot".

3) All the incessant late '80's & early '90's shoegaze music I listened to!

Cibo Matta? Isn't that the girls that sound like Yoko Ono?

Um, I'm not sure I'd go that far, but yeah, they have a thing. They get pretty ill. Not really around any more as that entity, but back in the day their shows were sick.

Yeah, Cibo Matto definitely had their own thing going on.

Thanks for the answers - interesting stuff. The only part of any of them that surprised me was "The Cardigans". Not that I dislike them - I dig them - just not a name I expected to hear.

But as long as we're talking Cardigans - how can anyone not enjoy this video:

Cardigans& Tom Jones, a semi-campy cover of the Talking Heads? Awesome.

For the record, your playing on Midnite Vultures is my favorite though Sea Change is actually my favorite Beck album. The bass tone on Paper Tiger is still one of my favorites.

One last question - have you ever worked with Andy Wallace? He's produced or mixed some of my absolute favorite albums, with Jeff Buckley's Grace at the top of the list. His work is always top notch even when I don't dig the artist.

Ever do any shows with The Polysics or the Pizzicato Five from Japan? Pizzicato Five's kind of light, but Polysics will melt your face off. Like Devo plugged into a light socket.

No shows with Polysics or Pizz 5, unfortunately. Cardigans because we all became good friends ALONG with Atari Teenage Riot. Most unlikely bill ever, with Beck headlining, back in '97. But we did a total barn-burning insane US tour with that lineup. Super eclectic, but we all just spent the whole time being insane, gettin' drunk and jumping on stage during eachother's sets. Lots of wonderfully crazy times.

THanks Jared re: Vultures. I think that might be the one. It's pretty gnarly all 'round. No, haven't had the pleasure working with Wallace. I'm quite a fan as well.

It's funny because one night we go to see Cibo Matto (in Charlottesville VA), at a really great spot under a sushi bar. Anyhow about 30 seconds into the opener "sugar water" I'm looking at the bass player and thinking...... man that guy looks a lot like Sean Lennon. And low and behold it was. He had a great groove cooking for that whole show.

Great rented Peavey fog horn PA tone that night too.

Not to derail this but, Justin, have you ever worked with Tchad Blake?
I really dig most any record he touches. That first Latin Playboys record has great bass sounds on it.

No, never have worked with Tchad! Big fan, of course. I'll put it on my future to-do list!
