Drummers

hey man.

so who are some of your favorite drummers to play with and why? so as not to make this question totally interviewesque, i guess i'm wanting to know what you look for and appreciate in drummers you play with. b/c let's face it: there are some really sick drummers out there, but i wouldn't necessarily enjoy playing with them, you know?

thanks!

I appreciate a very selective taste, incredible time, interesting groove and innovation. They need cool tones (usually not into bright, modern sounds from drums and cymbals). I like the sound of dead, woody, raw stuff with the occasional ratty, big snare and weird cymbals and strange percussion. I appreciate a guy who actually listens and plays compositionally. I like guys who can sit on something simple for ten minutes and never tire of the pleasure of that.

My favorites to play with:

Joey Waronker
James Gadson
Victor Indrizzo
Matt Chamberlain
Steve Shelley
Larry Mullins (not from U2, but from Iggy Pop and The Residents)

Whoa,
Are there any releases out where you're playing with James Gadson? I wanna hear that! Man, that guy's groove is sick.

Do you have any "dream" drummers you wish to play with if you could?

Steve Ferrone, who now plays with the Heartbreakers, has a solid smooth feel.
I also think Dave Grohl would be killer to play with just because he's so relentless.

pBass 2: James Gadson is on The Information and Sea Change, along with Joey Waronker. I've done other sessions with him too, such as a great UK-only album from the band "Hours".

ryco: Dave would be sweet to play with! I played with the Foos live once, but that was Taylor on drums, who was super fun.

I'd like to play with Kevin Haskins (Bauhaus, Love & Rockets). I think he is the singularly most underrated drummer over the past 25-30 years. Also, would love to play with Steve Drozd from the Lips! I'm sure there's more I can think of....

Another great drummer I thought of I love to play with is Brooks Wackerman from Bad Religion...he and I were the rhythm section for the songs from "Team America:World Police."

I am curious if you have any insight into Matt Sherrod's playing. I believe both of you worked together at the same time with Beck. I got to speak with him a few months ago, and we had an interesting discussion about how we both separately came to the same interpretation for this one song. It was fantastic having that drummer connection.

Thanks!

Is Brooks Wackerman related to Chad? Chad Wackerman is a killer drummer, but I could never stand to watch him play because his head never moves. Very disconcerting. Does Brooks' head move when he plays?
