Envelope filters

Sign in to disble this ad
Justin,

I've been on the hunt for an envelope filter that can handle the hot output of my Sadowsky active basses, and also sound great on my vintage P's and J's. The Discombobulator has a weird high-frequency noise occurring, the Ultron worked great, but is too complex to be able to tweak on the fly during a gig, and the EBS Bass IQ was noisy and not very responsive. Been thinkin about checkin' out the Groove Regulator. Any thoughts?

Thanks,

STP

While I can't help you on the active front (I only use passives), I do know that the head Groove Leaf dude posts here under the username "Spencer!" (without the quotation marks). He's a pretty friendly guy, I'm sure he'd be happy to answer a PM.

Also, the Regulator gets a lot of love 'round these parts. DOD 440 clones and the EHX filters are also pretty popular too.

edit: Whoops, I thought this was posted in effects. Don't mind me.

It sounds to me like you guys are more savvy and up-to-date than I on the envelope filter front than I have been for a while. What about the MXR Bass Auto Q? I don't know the Groove Regulator...another idea, which is great and flexible, is the Guyatone Optical pedal.

while it's still here I can chime in and give praise for my EHX Q-tron+

works awesome with bass and you can go from musical to idiotic very easily!

Just thought I would chime in here.

The Groove Regulator works fine with active basses. It's just a matter of dialing back the sensitivity to deal with a hot input signal.

It's a great filter. Very smooth, always sounds good and lets a lot of your tone through. The flipside of that is that it is not super wet. I'd use the word "tame" to describe it.

I just sold mine after A/Bing it with a Chunk Systems 00Funk. The Chunk has a steeper learning curve (overshooting the "pitch" knob or not having the "sweep" set correctly will give no filter effect at all) and is touchy with little adjustments. The flipside is that it is MUCH wetter and has a wider array of tones.

Basically, the 3 Leaf is what I recommend for people that want a plug-and-play, easily controllable and good sounding without being overpowering filter. It's in the same universe as the EMMA DiscumBOBulator in my opinion.

But for super squelchy, wet and bubbly filters there are others I'd recommend first. The 00Funk, Maxon AF-9, Q-tron (especially the big box original), or the old version DOD FX25 for instance.

MXR also has a new filter coming out that looks promising. Band pass with a clean blend and a number of useful features.

I just ordered the mxr auto q m120 not realising it was the guitar version. Does anyone know if it is as responsive to bass as the bass one??

very adjustable pedal (trimpots inside) that's not ridiculously expensive, but two things to keep in mind: filters react better to passive passes, and also hotter basses will trigger the filter sooner...

other than that, filters are also a matter of taste. try as many as possible!
