Is that Chunk Systems filter on Cell Phones Dead? If not, mind telling me what it is?

A Korg MS-20 filter.

I just watched the clip from the basement on youtube, and Justin I have say that the reverb on the Korg is killing! So tasteful.

Every time someone posts a video featuring the Beck crew, I'm more amazed at the soulfulness. You guys are great, and it looks like its a blast to be making music with these fellows.

Justin, your bass sounds AWESOME on that track, and the group vocals are out of this world!

Just to be clear: I'm playing a non-filtered, straight electric bass tone on that song. Primarily what you hear is the "Headhunters" thing, which is Brian Lebarton on his Korg MS-20 with some verb. In the end we do a back and forth with delay call and response type thing.

Thanks, though guys. Glad you like that performance and what not. That was a fun session.

I remember posting a clip of my old band where we loosely did a bit of Chameleon in the middle of a song and somebody here on TalkBass accused us of ripping off Beck.

Headhunters is such an incredible album and it still sounds so fresh despite being 36 years old. My favorite track is still Watermelon Man. So much going on rhythmically and all of it good.

Back to effects usage, what works VERY well for Chameleon and passable for Cell Phone's Dead is the EHX Bass Micro Synth with the stop frequency all the way down to give it that keyboard like cutoff.

Another option is the Robot Factory Photron Filter. It's an MS-20 based filter that sounds great with bass. Not the same as an actual MS-20 playing in unison with a bass but with a blend pedal it can be damn close. Expensive but a crazy little filter.

Ahh, that makes sense. While on the subject, I just looked at your Beck board and realized you don't really have any filters. I guess the Prunes&Custard and Boss Bass Synth keep you covered for those kinds of sounds? Or do you have something in a rack?

I'm sort of surprised to see that Boss pedal actually because it has a bad rep on this forum. I can't really talk though because I haven't tried it myself.

Thanks for sharing. I hope you're getting back a bit from this board as well.

Thanks for the link ... It's been on constant replay for the past few days (all the basement songs I've found ... Motorcade, Landslide, Think I'm in love).

I haven't listened to that CD for a while ... it's now back in rotation.

Killer performace Justin ... sounds even better than the CD!

It doesn't track synth the greatest, but if you can work within its limitations you can get some cool sounds. Plus I've fallen in love with its auto filter. It's on my board now strictly as a filter. I think it would do a reasonable facsimile of that synth in Cellphone's Dead if you don't expect miracles.
