ken andrews

How was it working with Ken Andrews? I have always been a big fan of his work, especially with failure. I only ask because Those guitars I think sound awesome, very 90's alternative. I was wondering if that was your direction or a collaboration between the two of you?

Thanks for your time.

Ken's my man. He and I work together on various things and have for many, many years. I brought him in on this because I thought he'd be perfect.

The album is extraordinarily varied, so this song is just a small sample of the sonics.

I recorded and produced all the guitars, Ken mixed. So yes, they are more or less represented as they went down.

Sounds great, what a amazing voice. That bass tone crushes like godzilla. The overall track has a warm feel to it, not a lot of stuff coming out has that. Can't wait to hear the rest. Your a master of your craft Mr. JMJ!

Production on that track sounds great Justin. Really has a sense of urgency throughout, especially in the bridge before the final chorus. The "Now-ow-ow-ow" vocal hook on the other hand...

Oh well, I am sure the Paramore fans will eat it up.

The first minute of the song reminded me of Missing Persons (it probably sounds nothing like them and it shows my age)

I love it, my 17 and 20 year old like Paramore and think it sounds great, so...

Great Job!

I have mixed feelings about this song. All I could think about for the first minute was the ting tings (yikes!) and the now-ow-ow-ow reminded me of Unwritten Law's Celebration song.

I also don't love the songwriting- maybe the vocal melody... I dunno...

I think the guitar sounds actually save the song. I am still looking forward I hear the whole album.

Not a fan of "Now." As a fan of Paramore, I hope there are better tracks on the album.

Edit: Am I the only that hates that "snare" drum?

I felt like the drums overall were pretty weak sounding.

Dang, Justin! Wow. I am a major Paramore fan and have loved the bass playing. So cool that you are on TB. I know I sound starstruck, and I guess I am a little :P. I know your demographic is younger, but this 51 yo loves the stuff you guys do! Keep up the great work! Now I have to go to the computer to listen to the new song bc it doesn't play on my iPad... When I go skiing, I often put on Riot to listen to as I carve up the slopes. Looking forward to that new album.

Cheers

Hmm...turns out this is a very polarizing track. Love and hate, with a sprinkling of ambivalence and "meh" in there too. So interesting!

Happy to see all these varied opinions.

Paramore themselves very much expected this sort of thing...I just sort of went along and helped them make the record I felt we needed to make in a very bloody-minded fashion, with no expectations or pre-conditions. We were certainly never creating anything for a specific fan or demographic. Rather, simply what Paramore wanted to create in the moment. The net result is that we all like how the whole thing turned out and we had fun, so that's cool with us.

This is very evident - no particular direction or target, but there is a "mood" Definitely makes me want to hear more instead if write it off because I feel like I know what the rest of it will sound like.

Being a huge fan of Paramore, this one took a bit to grow on me. I needed about 4-5 listens and then I got it. It's not as immediate as the first record, but I think that's the point. It's different and I'm glad you all decided to stretch their boundaries. I think it's worse for a band to keep trying to relive a breakout record over and over again!

I'm not big on the first single but can't wait to hear the rest of the album.

I can't force myself to like Pop Punk even if it has JMJ on it.

Ha! That was EXACTLY my first impression, as well - see post #4 (i.e., Missing Persons, KROQ).

Maybe it's best described as an homage to Missing Persons, KROQ, etc.

Sounds good, in any event.

cool stuff!
it's an interesting change for them it seems, a little less poppy, at least in the whole immediacy of todays "pop" singles!
It's a cool change in pace and sound for them, it seems like a cool track that shows they don't have the absolute need to create the expected follow up for their last record!
In any case, more info on the actual recording process would be cool if you would be willing to share, and I don't necessarily mean only details on the recording of the bass!
