Hey Justin, hearty congratulations and thanks for a great show in london the other night (I won't advertise the mobile brand owners of the venue ). Well worth the travel down from glasgow (as was the holiday and friend visiting I managed in brighton beforehand, but mostly I did it for you guys... )
It must've been fun playing metal and cars with gary numan, the roof nearly came off when you started the latter.
Enjoy the rest of the tour and I'll look forward to hearing what all the members get up to post NIN.

THanks for making the trip.

The bassist he had for that tour (at least for the SF show) was mostly just posing, not really playing, and totally inaudible in the mix anyway.
Let us know if any video surfaces of this current tour! |

| | | I, Assassin is great, and Gary's previous LP Dance (particularly Mick Karn's fretless work) contains some of my favourite bass licks ever! How did you first meet Gary, Justin? I detect a bit of his influence on the futurist-type stuff you did with Beck; did you guys ever cover him back in the day?
I always looked up to his first bass player, Paul Gardiner (that's him on the original versions of "Metal" and "Cars"). Unfortunately, Paul died of a heroin overdose in 1984... a real shame, as he was a great friend of Gary's and played really great, elegant lines with simplicity, groove and attitude! His glory moment for me is the live version of "Bombers" from The Touring Principle/Living Ornaments '79.
The bassline of "Cars" as he played it is actually a little bit different from the main riff that everybody remembers. There's a nifty little frill/grace note at the end of the bar. Dave Clarke did a remix on the Random album a few years ago that really brings it out to the fore. Quote: |

Not ideal, but cheaper than hiring JMJ I guess.
Ring any bells?

| | | | Paul Gardiner - that's the man. Incredible playing/approach. Sad story.
Likewise, I Assassin is such a strong record to me, bass and otherwise.
No, we never covered GN songs with Beck, though we referred to him often. Picture above is after a Brixton gig, with GN and MM in effect. Good times. Gary was so great. And just as great (and looking good) the other day when I met him again TWELVE YEARS LATER.

I was actually down the road from the venue and offered tickets, but allot of emotional pain right now, so couldn't cope with music. Hear VERY good reviewed from the night though.

| | | Hey I, Assassin fans: check out this unreleased set of three spots recorded by Numan in the Dance/Assassin-era stylee for an ill-fated 7-Up ad!
Not sure how to feel about that, actually. Of course I admire Numan's artistry no matter what he does, but to hear that very identifiable combination of sounds (which I cut my teeth on listening to and admiring) and THAT voice singing an advertiser's lyrics about a soft drink... let's just say I'm glad it was considered too off-the-wall to be used. Real nice bass playing though!
