Damn those are some big side burns, now if he could grow a handlebar that would be amazing.

I'm thinking Reznor could give Hank Rollins a run for his money at this point.

I think Trent looks a million times better now than when he was on the sauce. He never really looked healthy back then. Now he does. He's thicker than he used to be, but in a good way.

Wait, you're still talking about his appearance right?

Probably can't be said enough, but thanks be to Justin for answering so graciously and frankly. The original question here is one I probably wouldn't have the balls to ask, image could be a touchy thing for some people. I always wonder how much of that sort of thing is preconceived, sometimes people always just display an extension of themselves, but I'm sure there's a certain amount of "staging" going on in other cases. I suppose there's nothing necessarily wrong with either!

It's also cool to hear the respect for previous NIN-ers, people like Jeordie and Aaron North don't typically get credit for being great on their instruments but that lineup, and all the others, was terrific; maybe they won't be in BP mag or Guitar World on a yearly basis but Trent clearly knows what he's looking for and the results speak for themselves.

Alright, that's probably enough hero worship for now

So on this whole image kick I gotta question to ask. Are there any overweight bass players in this thread? I know I'm one, it definitely makes it a bit tougher to get gigs. But I use it more of a schick act and try to use it to my advantage however I can(I've been known to eat a big mac or two on stage and the crowd loves it!). But I can only put so much of a positive spin on it live, and theres not much I can do with it for an audition. Any other Heavy players out there and how do you over come this image problem. The only suggestion I have I stole from Kevin Smith....Wear Black, and wear layers.

Please don't do this, man. If I'm watching a band play, having heavy members is not something I would pay much attention to. But a guy eating a Big Mac during a show is embarassing for everyone. There's a difference between self-deprecating and degrading, and I think this crosses that line. It's also just weird and goofy. I suppose it depends on the sort of music and venues you're playing (like maybe if you're in Weird Al's band and you're playing "I'm Fat"...) but if I were you I would stop it.

Classic Rock and Blues in a strip club. Obviously I don't do it when I'm playing with the concert band in the park with my suit on.... but when it's tuesday night at the peelers who couldn't go for a burger??? I think it goes back to the main point of this thread, dress(and act) according to the gig. And the strip club gig is all about having a good time. It's just a fun gig.

I yo-yo. One year I'm fat, next year I'm semi-skinny, now I'm in a fat period again, so out comes the goatee to cover up my double chin, and I tuck in the inner shirt in case I raise my arm and it turns into a belly shirt, but I leave the outer shirt hanging out so nobody can see the belly button indentation. But I cover for it well because I'm entertaining as all get-out I run out in the crowd and dance with hot chicks (when there are hot chicks, that is), I do stunts on my upright, and generally do things a fat guy has no business doing. A little personality and a flair for entertainment goes a long way to cover up excess blubber

Yeah, I think that's all reasonable stuff. Eating a big mac, though...

I think this is also covered in Janek's forum.

Some great words of wisdom here though.

As far as the heavier/bigger guys, yeah I'm one of them. I'm not huge, but I'm by no means thin.

There's a picture of me from a gig I did over the summer. It was playing as part of a small festival. The band was 3 pieces-drums, bass, and then the singer/songwriter played guitar + used some loops. That's pretty typical look for me on a rock or singer-songwriter gig.

I agree with the sentiment of dressing to fit the situation. I was playing in a folk-rock band, the leader was pretty specific about what look he wanted to have on a given gig. For me, it ended up looking a lot like the picture above, maybe swap out the black jeans for dark blue, and switch from running shoes to black oxfords.

all the best.
