Paper Tiger vs. Melody Nelson

hmm, this similarity is not a coincidence, right?

I really dig Gainsbourg's work, but who else would you say influenced you and AIR in those days? And AIR probably influenced you as well (and passed some other influences on to you, right?), how was it working with them?
apart from what we can find out on youtube, hehe (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-wCQhwiUhxE). well, they sure made some of the sexiest music I've ever heard

Also, I see that Herbie Flowers seems to be responsible for some interesting stuff (like the bassline from Lou Reed's Walk on the Wild Side), would you recommend any other album where he played?

many thanks for any suggestion!

btw, just to ask an expert - would you say the bass Herbie used on melody nelson, was it his jazz bass or some other bass?

Hi,

Oh this question again. No coincidence there. It was revision coupled with homage. Very deliberate, somewhat obvious.

Influences for that side of my bass playing (and for all the Beck/Air clique)? All the Scott Walker stuff, all the Ennio Morricone, Os Mutantes, Francois de Roubaix, all the Enoch Light (and obviously Free Design), The Association, many many others.

Herbie is great with Elton John, Bowie, T Rex, all kinds of stuff. Just Google a discography.

If that is indeed Herbie on bass for Melody Nelson, I've been told by credible sources that it's a Burns Bison, in spite of the fact that his only real electric bass he uses is a Fender Jazz.

yeah, I feel like an idiot... but that's what I get for being enthusiastic about my "discoveries"... I'm still just a little kid in a way

but a whole new dimension in music has opened to me recently... just to help illustrate my point - I "discovered" Jamerson this year, after playing bass for 7 years... the whole concept of music and bass playing has changed drastically for me I cannot understand what I have been doing for the last 7 years... I guess I was trying to play the instrument, not the music....

anyway, I got carried away, I will think (and search) before I post in the future, hehe

Don't feel like an idiot! It's all good. It's no biggie that you brought it up in a new thread, but yeah: search is always a good thing. Anyway, glad to help...always interested in illuminating things further.

oh no, it's OK to feel like an idiot it's liberating! we all have to learn to admit that we're wrong, cause we're actually wrong most of the time but that's way too philosophical for this forum, hehe, though I see that bassists are often very philosophical
