Playing live "in the box" ?

Hey Justin,

I have a question about live in the box. Would you ever do it?
I'm looking at it because I love the possibilities of numerous pedals, not to mention EQ and compression capabilities that come out of Logic/Mainstage.

Otherwise I'm simply looking at getting a bunch of pedals, and some kind of pre/DI like a Tone Hammer or SWR MM2 pre/comp.

Do you think the quality is there? Reliability? Sonic possibility in NI Guitar Rig or IK Multimedia's Amplitube great enough?

I'm already using Mainstage and Spectrasonics Trilian for key bass because it sounds so good.

Any feedback is really appreciated! Thanks!

I think I could be convinced that it's a great way to go. But something about it feels a little too distant, and I'm not just talking about latency. It's something that's hard to pin down. Trent had it going on the last NIN tour. I'm not sure for me if I could do it and still feel like I'm rocking, though the sonic possibilities are deeper than w/ pedals.

Live is so great with plugs (especially if you get Max for Live) that, in the right format, it could be really interesting indeed.

And my comment about it feeling too "distant" goes for anything: NI Guitar Rig, Amplitube, Mainstage, Live, whatever.

I have all the tools, I just never use that stuff outside of a studio format. It would be easy enough for me to try it all out.

Best,
JMJ

Thanks Justin. I pretty much know what you mean about it feeling distant. I can't name exactly what makes it feel that way, but I sure feel it. I would use an Apogee interface and latency would be a no-issue.

I'm scoping it out... Thanks for your feedback, and at least allowing some realm of possibility of it being a good idea!
