Re-Amping

Hey Justin,

I'm currently doing some recording with my band at the moment, and we are just about done with the all the tracking (along with some more creative and fun found-object percussion tracks and iggy-meets-fugs animal yelps!).

I recorded my jazz bass through a cranked 60's Bassman head into an ampeg cab as well as a tube DI. Just as tracking has been basically finished. the dude who is recording us got his vintage ampeg b18 out of the shop, and even though I really dig the sound I got through the bassman, I got to play a little through the B18 and fell in love with that tone as well. His plan is to take the tube DI signal and re-amp it through the B18 and then blend the tracks in the mix.

This sounds like a great idea to me, but since I have no experience with reamping anything, I was wondering if it will have the same dynamics and feel as If I played through it, or will I get a better result just re-tracking?

Sorry if thats a bit long, but I would love any insight or tips you can share. Thanks for being on the board dude!

You can totally re-amp it, dude. it'll be the same flavor as if you played it, basically. The only difference to that is that you MIGHT have (if you had recorded live through the B18) responded differently to the dynamics of that amp if you had it in your ears. In other words, the B18 and Bassman may or may not inform your playing differently.

I think it's worth just re-amping, and going with it. I'll wager it'll sound rad.

The Radial stuff is great for reamping.

Thanks again. We are going in to re-amp it this week. Listened to the straight DI track today and it sounds good to start, so I'm Psyyyched

Yeah, you'll be fine. It'll help. Make sure your engineer aligns the DI and amp tracks after printing for phase, but it sounds like your at a level of recording where your engineer is way on point, so no worries. Just stating that for the record.

Good luck,
JMJ

Will do, thanks so much for the advice man. Up until now, I've only done very DIY recordings. Now we're in an analog studio with a great engineer, so It's been an awesome experience so far. But yeah, he's definitely way on point

FWIW - I use the Radial Pro Re-amp box, as opposed to the more expensive x-amp version. For me mostly it's guitar tracks in my project studio. I love the little thing it's a god send for the solo guy ...

A year and a half later the final product is almost out. Any feedback is much appreciated!
