hey J,

I found on youtube (almost)soloed tracks of instruments of several different famous songs.
it's very interesting to notice how "imperfect" they are. so many things you just don't notice when you listen to the song and I personally think just add up a lot of character.
I was wondering if there's any chance we could listen to some of your bass tracks.
being how aggressive some of your performances are, I'm actually pretty damn curious!

I agree with you, and find those things interesting too. I'm a pretty sloppy player sometimes, so I don't really feel that comfortable doing that myself. If one were to show up sometime, then so be it, and I wouldn't be bummed.

I've listened to some. Steve Harris, Jamerson, Flea, etc...I wonder though how many are actual? Some are great! The vocal ones are hard to deny. Marvin Gaye on "Heard It Through The Grapevine" gives me chills.

There's a great DVD series called "Classic Albums" (they have them on netflix). They take an album (Steely Dan's "Aja", Queen's "A Night at the Opera", etc. etc.), go into the studio with some band members, and bring up the original tapes and solo various tracks. Steely Dan is often criticized for being too "perfect" but it was surprising how much slop (all of it good) there was on that record. You don't notice it in the context of the full mix, but on their own, a lot of the tracks didn't seem like they could possibly sound good. But of course, they did.

I'd love to hear Zeppelin tracks. Their first album was recorded in a single day. Jimmy Page loved to do things on the first or second take, for the "authenticity". There are times in Misty Mountain Hop that were completely not according to plan. They never worked out a real ending for In My Time of Dying, which is why it just peters out until someone coughs. I love it.

sometimes it's hard to let stuff go in the studio... i have a new approach to mistakes as a session player in the studio... if i feel like i might have played something a little sloppy, but no one else in the control room says anything or gives me 'the look', i won't mention it, unless i know it's something that will present big problems down the road (like a wrong note on the downbeat, etc...)

so far it's been working out well. just thought i'd share.

I adopt the exact same technique: if no one says it's wrong, keep going.

as per the authenticity, I've listened to some chili peppers, tool, marvin gaye and I'm 100% sure those are original.

There are many times when I'm tracking and while doing it, I'll think, "****! I f'd that up, but then we'll listen back and it will sound quite good. Sometimes I just feel like I didn't hit it "square" and that I need to re-do it, but most of the time it's fine and everyone else is like "it's good, lets keep moving." It's worked out fine for me to trust the guys in the booth. Let's face it, we're our own worst critics and sometimes even if it didn't feel perfect under our fingers, in reality, it's good.

Yes, definitely some are authentic. There's no doubt about the vocal ones. The David Lee Roth "Running With The Devil", priceless, hilarious, and awesome.
