I was replaced in a band (internal politics) by a young bass player who is a monster. But he constantly solos over everything. We did a couple nights where we both played, alternating sets. I'd play, and the dance floor would be full. He'd come up and other than a couple young guys staring at him with their mouths hangin open, the dance floor would clear, and people would head for the door. Even on something like "Mustang Sally" he played a constant "diddle, diddle, diddle..." over the whole neck, constantly.

One has to groove, doncha' know.

I ran out of solos by the late 70's...Just used 'em all up. No one noticed them missing.

Ha ha ha ha!!

And, yeah. The Mustang Sally thing is a perfect example of not getting it. Even if you are capable of playing notes all over the place, if that number gets called and you don't play the classic bass line of that tune, you're doing it wrong!! :^)

There's good solos and bad solos, just like everything else. On bass, a good solo usually really concentrates on melody, in my opinion. Solos heavy in rhythmic content only don't have much carry power. If that's what you want, let the drummer take a solo.

Manowar...the band that's either awesome or a complete joke, depending on who you ask.

I'm standing by joke, myself.

Bass solo is a real good way to clear the dance floor.

I could be wrong and around here I usually am.

I agree. The most boring part of any concert is when every member of the band takes turns doing their 10 to 15 minute solo. In my opinion, and in the opinion of just about everyone I have played with, soloing is nothing more than self indulgence on the part of the musician. As you said, nobody cares. However, when I saw Marcus Miller in Boston several years ago, I really enjoyed his solos.

Well, since they’ve broken the record for “loudest metal concert” three times I believe, and I can’t imagine their fans being non-metal enough for ear protection, I’m not sure you can trust the credibility of their reaction to what they’re hearing anymore!!

Trade shows do strange things to people's judgement. Try not to judge too harshly.

Ah, music store chops. It's that sort of playing that makes me *BRIEFLY* sympathise with the people who work in Guitar Center or Sam Ash. But then I remember my experiences at those stores, and I don't feel so bad for those guys, since the employees can be among the worst offenders of music store chop-itis.

Still too long, and too recognisable!

Played it at a covers gig for the first time the other night (filling in for a band I had never played with) and it was the thing I was most worried about - because I thought, "If I mess this up, I'll never be asked back".

How can so few notes produce so much pressure??! I want my old band back every week when we never played it!!

Thankfully I nailed it...at least judging by the singer's reaction.

Regarding the OP: No joke - I think I saw the exact moment you are referring to, or at least one that was horrifying similar. Three dudes, just shredding all over each other, yet looking back and forth as if there was an exchange of ideas going on or something. If it was the same thing I witnessed, there was a guy trying to play with a drummer on an electronic kit directly across while this went on. Just epic lunacy.

But hey - I got to rap with and see Lee Sklar and Rickey Minor lay it down, so I left happy.
