Insanity. I mean their own shows are so fun to watch: art-math metal with preposterous section changes, odd times, and impossible choreography based on chaos theory. I just stand on the side of the stage and grin from ear-to-ear during their gigs. Trent and I couldn't help ourselves inviting them to play with us. A glorious mis-match. I almost wish they really did their thing during our show to the fullest, but that would have involved hospitalization.

The guitarist Ben was soloing during the bridge at one point, and you can't see it but I was pouring water on his head the whole time and spitting water on him, while Robin Finck and the other guitarist were in a man-tangle.

There's an HD version on NIN.com.

Good times.

The highlight of the Soundwave festival for me. The minute the went on stage, I was already in the pit getting annihilated by a very enthusiastic crowd. The stage antics seemed to have rubbed off on the fans in the mosh significantly. One big fella was encouraging people to run towards him and boost them over the barrier. Guitarist Jeff Tuttle saw this and couldn't help but raise his fist in approval.

As for the actual band, it was definitely an experience to remember being my first DEP show. The stage presence of the band is simply jaw dropping while the proficiency of their playing was spot-on despite its chaotic and technical nature. While a lot of on-lookers passing by may not have appreciated the sound of DEP, they were arguably one of the most entertaining bands playing on the main stages. Very full-on and intimate with the crowd which is to be expected from them.

It also seemed that every show had a life of its own. Most bands usually stick to the same routine when touring several consecutive dates in a country. From what I saw on youtube, Brisbane involved Ben Weinman smashing his guitar in the middle of a song and throwing it into the crowd while vocalist Greg Puciato ripped off "NO MOSHING/CROWD SURFING" signs on the scaffolds as a stance on rebellion or just pure awesome. While Sydney's show (the one I attended) wasn't as violent, there was a significant amount of comedy and antics with band members jumping off each other's stacks, into the crowd and Greg Puciato calling upon an innocent on-looker all the way at the back of the mosh to get him an icy treat (which he did!).

The setlist was nothing short of satisfying either. The best from Calculating Infinity to Ire Works was played including personal favourites Horse Hunter, Sunshine the Werewolf, Fix your face and 43% Burnt (pretty sure they played the last one but I could be wrong)

Overall, I left very happy that day. Will definitely go see them again next time they're hear with high hopes cause I simply know they won't and can't disappoint.

After reading this thread, I went on Youtube and checked out some DEP. They're pretty good...I don't dig the songs where the singer goes "Arrrggghh arrggghhhh ruff ruff arrrgggghhh," but when he actually sings, they're pretty great.

Man-tangle?

To be honest it took me a while to really get into them...but that's because at the time I discovered them I was going through a screamo/metalcore phase...if it didn't have melody, harmonies or breakdowns then I didn't dig it. Such is the mind of a 14 year old angst ridden teen, haha.

I didn't really start getting into them til I started listening to a lot more prog music and such. The band that really got me to appreciate DEP and their style was Between the Buried and Me. Not as intense as DEP but they're pretty similar in regards to compositions and general song structure.
