'Standing in'

Hey,

I was watching your gig at Roskilde festival and Oxegen and started thinking about what it would be like the 'stand in' (I know this is not really what it is, but at the moment I can't think of a better way of putting it) as a bassist for an already well established name like NIN.

It struck me that most of the songs are of Reznor's creation, so does it ever feel like you are covering the songs since you weren't part of the process? If so, doesn't that get old?

Since you're still doing it I'll assume that it doesn't get old; but, saying that, have you had to make an effort not to get 'bored' of someone else's songs?

Thanks,
Chris

I never "stand in" for anything. The day I start a new gig, the process has begun (with lighting speed) to make the gig, and the songs, my own. It's something I'm good at.

Let me be clear that I say this without any attempt to toot my horn or be immodest or vain. This is just the way I work, and part of my survival in the music business.

Watching, listening, adapting, owning, becoming.

So now, even though the NIN touring cycle is likely over for good (or a very very long time), I consider myself not only a band member, but also an ambassador of the music, the mission, etc.

If you have the courage and tenacity to get inside the mind and heart of the artist you're working with, boredom will (hopefully) never come into play.

Best,
Justin

Very interesting and I think it shows how much "attitude" is a big part of the job and what determines whether you get the job or not...?

So I can imagine that anybody who like the OP, talked about being "bored", would not be the kind of guy that would get hired very often...

Don't jinx me, please!

No, I see what you mean. It's all about attitude and the way you approach the project, I guess. To be honest, Justin has my dream job(s), so I damned well hope that I get hired one day!

Thanks for your reply, Justin!
