Synth or pedal combination?

Sign in to disble this ad
Hi Justin,

I need to come up with a type of synth sound similar to the one in Eurythmics' Sweet Dreams as a synth bass line.

As I was reading the different threads in your forum, I found one where you suggested, among other options, the Microkorg for some synth bass applications. I looked into it and in a couple other options and I was wondering about these different things:

1- Can this type of sound can be achieved with a combination of pedals? (dist. , phase, EHX bass synth)

2- Do you have any experience with Dave Smith's Mopho? Someone turned me over to this instead of the Microkorg. I could hook a MIDI controller to it but it also has an audio in, I still need to find out if a bass could be plugged in it.

3- Any other suggestions?

Forward thanks!

1) Sure! I emphasize, this "type" of sound...not necessarily "the" sound. It may be in the same family. To me, that line sounds like a Sequential Pro One, but i could be way off.

2) I have a Mopho. It's super sick. Dunno about plugging a bass in or not. I think it sounds insane though.

3) Octave CAT (might be too fat, though), Roland JX3P with the Programmer, Juno 106. I know a Micro Korg can get super close. Mopho too, I'd wager.

Thanks Justin,

I tried and figure out a pedal combination but as I'd have to add some pieces, it would turn out more expensive than to buy the Mopho, which will be useful as a production tool in the studio anyway.

What I gathered about the audio in is you can plug your bass and sample the sound and have it treated by the unit (the sequencer part maybe?) but you can't plug and play through it like a processor.

Anyway, thanks for your well appreciated input.

How about a Chunk Octavius Squeezer, or the new Roland VG-99 or other bass/guitar synth?

The octavius sounds really cool from the samples but it's out of stock and 625$ where as the Mopho is 400$. I can still add a MIDI controller and be below the price of the squeezer.

But that's something I'll keep an eye on for sure and try and scoop a used one here in the classifieds maybe.

I really thought I could manage to come up with something using the VT Bass, some phase, an octaver and maybe some other things but I think the more I look, the more it leads to the Mopho.
