Year Zero Live: Vessel, Me I'm Not, Great Destroyer

So how did you guys pull these songs off live??

I pretty much get the guitar rigs for these songs, but I'm really curious how the rest of the songs were done. It's really hard to tell from the videos out there what kind of manipulation was being done not only to the music but the visuals too. Was the band triggering off pre-rendered loops, and manipulating those or was some of it actually played live on synths?

Also - do you know what TR was using for the percussive loop stuff on the NIN/JA tour and later? Like for Burn, 1,000,000 and Mr Self Destruct? It looks like it was an Akai something but I'm really curious what exactly was hapenning. I like that style of building into songs and would like to figure out something similar.

I know this is for stuff that was outside your rig, but hopefully you can shed some light.

Cheers!

I would prefer, as my bandmates likely would as well, to keep this somewhat of a mystery.

Suffice to say, there was both manipulation of visuals and pre-rendered loops, as well as live synthesis.

Percussive loop stuff was controlled by Akai APC40 on later tour. The nuances of it I will leave unrevealed at this point, out of respect to T.R.

Best,
JMJ

Thank You! for this perfect answer. Those of us who have "Another Version Of The Truth" (Did you received your copy yet? If so, any opinions on the subject?) have been given just enough technical info via the Interviews and Behind The Scenes footage with The Moment Factory to understand the "broad strokes" on how the imagery of the "Lights In The Sky" shows were created... but not *so* much that the absolute magic of those shows has been spoiled in both memories of the shows as well as the "Better Than A Label Could Ever Do It" fan-created edit and release that was created.

...but in terms of converting the "Year Zero" songs from their mostly electronic state on the album (yes, I still refer to releases as such, as well as giving the stink-eye to people who talk about when so-and-so's release "drops" ) to more "fleshed-out" full-band arrangements, I must personally toss you another "Thanks!" for the pick-funk bassline created for "God Given" that fits the song as perfectly as skinny-leg jeans fit ill-fed Emo kids. That was my "Song To Learn" a few weeks back and it managed to be both a challenge (I'm mostly a fingerstyle guy who's attempting to regain some of the pick skills that I had back in my \m/etal days) as well as a huge amount of fun with the movement, note & timing choices in your line. Hand to heart, your choices in creating that line should be taught to Bassists in music schools as the perfect example of "The Balance Between Under-and-Overplaying". Simply perfection...

Wow, cheers! Glad that somewhat offhand rendering of mine resonates with you for "God Given". YZ songs were among the most satisfying to play on tour, btw.

AVOTT is on my desk. It's insane. I love. They sent me a custom box with far too much content for me to digest in the near future, but at some point soon I will get into it. But it's gorgeous.

That is one awesome package. And there's even The Downward Spiral live!
