Andrew Schmidt Bows?

Anyone have any experience with the work of Andrew
Schmidt. My refereneces list him as working in New
York from 1957 through 1979 and being a employee
William Salchow. That would seem like good credentials.

Lightbulb From the Wenberg Book...

Quote:
"Schmid, Andrew X. (NOT SchmidT!); New York, NY. 1957-. Born in NYC. Studied at the School of Artisanry at Boston College in 1979. Worked in England for Eph Segerman for one year, in Pittsburgh for the Kschier Bros. for one year, and since 1983 has worked for William Salchow in NYC (this book published in 1987). He has made 10 Bows branded "A.Schmid N.Y." under the lapping, numbered under the Frog. Handmade fittings. Intends to specialize in early period bows."
If you have a Bass Bow with his name and spelled SchmidT, I would assume it could possibly be a fake. The is no mention of him making any Bass bows at all.

I might be wrong but I think that Shar Music here in Ann Arbor sold A. Schmidt bows for a while, I'm not sure whether they still do or not. They were on the low end ($100-$150 maybe).

EDIT : checked Shars website, and they go for $99.

Ok, so that answers the question. For that price, it's a low end Chinese Bow with a borrowed/False Mis-spelled name.

I don't know of any single person in the western world making Bows in that price range in this century or even most of last century.

It's just a name or brand then but NOT that person as mentioned above.

Using a German name like many brands do is most likely intended to steer you away from finding out that they are made in China. Eastern Europe is another possibility but I think for the most part, China is making most of the Bows under $2k at the moment.

Thanks Ken

The old rule, if it looks too good to be true it probably is,
seems to apply 99.9% of the time...but my reference
does show the T at the end for Andrew X. It could be wrong.
Still prolly a cheapey.

There are several other makers with the 'T' at the end but in the Wenberg book, it has 'him' with out it listed as shown in my qouted post above both times ending with only a 'd' at the end.

Also, T or no T, for that price, get the large spare ribs instead of the medium..
