"authentic" style bow

Hi, I´m think of setting one of my basses up for baroque and early classical style music. GUt strings and all.

Any suggestion s as to a bow ? I am a french bow player and would like to stay that way for the time being.

What I am looking for are suggestions as to an affordable source of a decent "authentic" style bow.

Thanks for any help.

bows...

Talk to Gary or Eric at Upton Bass, they make a great bow in house for about $600.00, They call it "Brazilwood" rather than pernambuco but I've had one for three years and compared it to many far more expensive bows and it leaves nothing to be desired. Some terrific players have sat in and been amazed when I tell them how cheap that bow was. If you are near New England go to their shop and try a bunch of them, you'll find one you like.
Good luck....

I Don't know any makers in Oslo, But there are a few in germany that deal with Baroque Bows. I would reccomend
Tobias Festl. Others might be able send you a bow for trial.

I don't know how much you're willing to spend, but Contrabasse shoppe sells a few baroque and period bows. http://www.contrabass.co.uk/csbows.htm

Very interesting what your doing. More power to you. I hope to do something like that someday....

Max Kasper of Symphony Nova Scotia makes great bows (he also made his own bass). Joel Quarrington and Gary Karr use his bows. I think they are about $1200-$1500 Cdn. You can see his Baroque/Classical bow at the SNS website.

PM me if you want his email or phone number.

There's some good YouTube video of the principal bass of the London Symphony playing the 3rd Bach Suite with a Baroque bow.

I'd check out Yitamusic on Ebay. They make snakewood bows of all sorts which anyone can afford, and are open to custom jobs. I say get your feet wet first and figure out what you really want before dropping the big bucks.
