How can I tell the difference between Brazilwood and Permabuco?

Visually, almost the only thing that differs is the grain.
Pernambuco has a tighter grain because it comes from the
center of the tree. Also, Pernambuco has a color that is an extremely
distinct orange-copper color when unfinished.

Other than that density is the only factor. Pernambuco is very dense
and should feel heavier than it looks.

i recently heard of bows made of something called "snakewood". how is this different??

It's a different wood. I've been seeing more of it, probably because the wood isn't as tightly controlled as pernambuco.

As for whether it's better, worse, or just different compared to pernambuco, that's a question for someone more professional than I.
