Rosin is basically boiled and sometimes treated tree resin.

Most rosin recipes are secret.

The formula for Oak rosin was hidden away for a long time. Gaston Brohan, principle bass of the Detroit Symphony for a lot of years and bass professor at Wayne State University made Oak rosin in his garage. When he died, Oak was unavailable and a lot of us switched to Pops. The history of the formula is here: http://www.gregorianstrings.com/history.html - - - but the formula isn't! :-)

Bill, are you inferring that the Oak we buy today from Arnold Gregorian isn't the same stuff made by Gaston? Do you have proof of this?

No. My cute little sentence was meant to bring the discussion back to main topic of the conversation which is the formula for rosins. To clarify the sentence, the history is on the website I pointed to, but the formula for the rosin is not on the website.

I've tried the resurrected Oak rosin and it's the same as I remember it from back in the '60's. Had I not spent 30 years with Pops I would probably have gone back to Oak.
