Question Emilio Slaviero Bows

Does anyone here have any experience with Bows by Emilio Slaviero in Cremona?

I just got a nice French Bow used from Italy and was made by him within the last 10 years of so. I emailed him to see if he could date it or maybe the model at least.

With my luck, he wont speak English or respond but I am hoping to hear from him in some way at least.

The Bow is 130 grams and has fairly standard French measurements. At first it didn't feel so great with the black hair until I got some extra rosin on it (the hair probably needs to be replaced). Then I put a rubber grip on it adding 4 grams and it greatly improved the feel.

I will use it this week in concert to see if its a keeper but so far, it holds up just fine against my two other favorites by Lipkins as well as my Bazin.

Ken,

He's a friend of Sergio Scaramelli's, I believe.

I've never dealt with him because, as far as I know, he doesn't make German bows. Two other fine Italian bow makers are Giovanni Lucchi and Marco Pasquino (I opted for a Pasquino bow over one of Lucchi's recently)

Yes, he DOES make German Bows. He shows 2 models on his website and a stand partner of mine used to own one about 10 years ago and said it was the best bow he ever played.

I am curious to heap opinions of other here about his Bows if anyone has actual experience with them.

I know Lucchi as I have not only owned 2 of his early Bows from the '70s but even had him in my NY Apartment with his wood meter in the late '80s.

Scaramelli now has an English speaking Secretary so if I don't hear back from Emilio, I will ask Sergio to translate for me if he can.

I'll have to look again next time I'm in the market. But I STRONGLY recommend Marco Pasquino's bows. Catalin Rotaru uses them, as do a few other players out here (Lisa Gass imports them).

That's nice BUT, this Thread was put up to find out about Slaviero, not Pasquino. Sorry!

I'm sorry but I read back and can't see what you are referring to as far as his Bows go.

Actually, I gave YOU info on him as he DOES make German Bows unless he just stopped making then and forgot to change the website.

I am looking to hear about experience with his French Bass bows. Sorry if I didn't make that clear in the beginning.

You shoulda wrote me ken...

Hi Ken, Weird, we must be bow soulmates or something. I have a Slaviero bow and just got my S Lipkins bow while at the same time trying to get the feeling of a Bazin bow.

I have an ES bow I bought in 91. It is one of the best now I have ever tried. It is about 135g. There are a couple of things I don't like (kind of ). It is a little shorter than normal. ABout 1 cm. So I really need to be able to hold out on long tones.
The balance is great and I have used it from Bach to Bruchner. Holding up in everything.

I bought a Lipkins bow ( which I just received a month ago after waiting 3+years ) And the Lipkins bow is perfect for my new Charton bass. The Slaviero is great too but more on the fat side. But extrememly clear.

I would deffinately buy another given the chance.
Let me knwo Ken if you need any other info.

Thanks.. This was just what I was looking for. Someone that has played his Bows and you also have Lipkins and Bazin as well. A word of note is to play the Lipkins Bow. They seem to warm up over time. I always think more of each of her bows after playing them a bit as they sound better after playing it for while.

I couldn't agree with you more.

About the Slaviero bows. He sometimes uses exotic material. My frog for example is some sort of bull horn. Very beautiful but it is as fragile as a fingernail. Watch out.

My Bow is quite standard. The Pernambuco has a hint of flame and seems very dense. the Frog is Ebony and the Tip some sort of Bone. Seems very solid to me. About the same in construction as my Lipkins bows.

I really like mine, dense wood, heavier than my other bow, but smaller. I'm still getting used to a smaller frog and it being a little heavier than my marco raposo, which is also a good bow. I don't know what it weighs, it came with white hair, which is still on it. I'm not a pro, the only other bow I've had is the marco raposo, but it's a pretty good upgrade, very noticable to me. My teacher said, now you have a bow!
