Fetique on eBay, no reserve - ***?

Anyone seen this?
http://cgi.ebay.com/Bass-Bow-stamped...QQcmdZViewItem

Did a little bit of googling and found some information here:
http://www.atelierlabussiere.com/bows.htm

Looks to me like the ebay bow is a counterfeit, because a) it doesn't look like any other Fetique I've seen in person or on the net, and b) it appears that the genuine bows are stamped "VTOR FETIQUE A PARIS" instead of "VICTOR" as clearly shown in the ebay listing.

Now I'm curious - are there many of these out there and where would they have come from? Anybody know?

Fakes

If you look at the seller's feedback, you'll see comments about the bows being "a fake" or "nice copy".

The bows this person is selling are nicely made Chinese factory bows in the under $150 range. Note the distinctive wire wrapping pattern on the stick. These (apparently) same bows have been on eBay stamped with at least 6 different makers names and some with no stamp. They are being sold by several different eBay sellers. As with most cheaper Pernambuco bows these days, they are made in China. I have played one and for under $150, they are pretty decent bows. (At least the one I played was). If the seller is offering the option to return the bow if you don't like it, it could be worth considering.

Lightbulb Stamped!

"Bass Bow stamped Victor Fetique a Paris". That is the 'Key' to all of HIS mis-leadind Bow auctions. He uses the most famous names and people often read 'past' the word 'Stamped' as well as the meaning. I can't say that it IS Pernambuco without looking at it BUT from the reddish color and dull laquer finish over it I would guess low grade Brazilwood is also a possibility. Pernambuco would have a nice shimmer under the finish whereas the Brazilwood grade is often duller looking having a wider grain.

It is believed by many that these two woods come from the same log and that the trade names are use to distinguish the denser heart wood from the outer wider grained wood from the exact same species "chaesalpina echinatais".

Read here; http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Brazilwood

I once read that 'knowledge is power'. In some ways I believe this is very true!

Can you pick the Brazilwood 'grade' from this picture?

Edit: "In the bow making business, the best quality Brazilwood bows are referred to as "Pernambuco", while those bows of lesser quality wood from this species are often called "Brazilwood"." .. Quoted from the link above.

Edit note: This is no different than buying a Chinese Bass 'Labelled' Gasparo d'Salo. With Basses most people can tell a new or fake Bass from a 200-400 year old one but with Bows it seems there is much less knowledge from buyers allowing more mis-led fraud than with actual instruments.

Ha, that's what I figured. I don't look at the 'bay very often these days so I hadn't seen one of these before.

Ken,
The one I saw was definately not poor grade Brazilwood. I've actually considered buying one for a backup if the price was right. As inexpensive wood bows go, it isn't bad. Actually it was better than the typical "pernambuco" wood bows I see that are included with public school bid basses from the major suppliers.

IMO, Anyone who thinks that it is possible to buy a hand made bow by a major bowmaker for $100 is totally out of touch with reality. However, I wish I had a dollar for every German "Stradivaris" that was brought into my shop for "appraisal" over the years.
