It's not true that your thumb is involved in keeping the French bow from dropping to the floor?
Even those who advocate "as little thumb touching the bow as possible" wouldn't claim that.
Though the two holds and the two types of bows can accomplish the same sound, they're definitely different in bow hold "necessities".
This difference makes it far easier for beginners to start with German; learning to use the whole arm in as relaxed a way as possible, then ready for French, requiring more small muscle use in the hand, but with the "heavy arm" concept already well established. String crossing becomes much easier this way too; German teaches use of the whole arm; moving to French makes string changing seem like a much smaller motion.
