Good alternative to Pops?

So recently my Pops has been creating a sappy layer of rosin on my bow hair which makes it really hard for the hair to grap the stings.

What are some good alternatives that have the same qualities of Pops, in terms of how it grips the string?

I've always used Kolstein rosin. It's sticky, but not too sticky. It doesn't give your bass a "rosiny" sound like POPS.

I've tried Pop's, Carlsson, and Brohan (oak), and gone back and forth a few times, but I've settled recently on Carlsson and I intend to put the matter to rest. It's sticky enough, but not too sticky.

How many swipes? I use pops but only 1-2 swipes per playing sessions, which is usually 2-3 hours.

Take a look at Nyman as well.

I concur with what ross said above. I am very happy with using Nyman and I chose it over Pops. It is kinda really sticky, but I actually like it that and it stays in a good shape for the whole year. And costs me less than Pops

Thanks. When I get a rehair I think I'll try out different rosins.

Another vote for Kolsteins All-Weather from a former Pops devotee. In winter months, carry the Kolsteins in my hand or my pocket for a few minutes before using to attain proper goopiness (the rosin, that is).

that's good, but if i forget about it i just breathe on the rosin to give it a little condensation (i google translated it, please correct me if you use another word for it //sweden).

I just tried Melos dark.. love the tone in the higher register but doesn't seem to sticky enough on lower strings... then again i bought it on ebay and it looks like it was pretty dried up.. maybe too old. then i melted it with pops and its pretty good, but that pure tone in higher register isn't really there any more.
Thinking of ordering more melos elsewhere and maybe trying the light one too..
I mean, the tone was truly lovely.

Carlsson's has been working out very well for me. A great all-purpose rosin. I too had a major problem with Pop's. Especially with it melting.

It doesn't even have to melt-- if you lay it on its side for a week or so, it will "flow" down to that side.

I'm a Nyman's user-- have been since my elementary orchestra teacher (also a respected luthier here in PA) turned me on to it back in 5th grade!

You can reform melted Pops by waiting until it gets hot out, then leaving it on the dashboard of your car in the sun with the windows up. It will regain its original shape. But never put rosin in a microwave!

I forgot to add that the dashboard method only works if you still have the red plastic container! (in high school, we used to see how wide a puddle Petz makes if you leave it out in the sun without the green container...)

Nyman's is less than pops? I get Pops at David Gage for less than $10, so idk if I would go for it, I have used Kolsteins, and it was a drier rosin, which means scoring the top with a key, now there's rosin everywhere.

@ the op, Think of Pops as the standard of rosin, at some point or another everyones used it, I'm a life long pops user, and I can tell you, when used right you will be successful with your rosining of a bow, too much and it will get sticky and clump, too little and you won't get any sound. I do anywhere from 3-5 passes back and forth both times, especially when I havnt used that bow(3 Glassers, 1 Brazilwood) in a while. I don't scratch the top, I just aply and leave it in an upright position. You don't need expensive or fancy things, they just need to get the job done... unless your like us and have major build ups of GAS.

Clarity winter rosin's pretty good, from what I remember. I haven't used it in a while.
