H. R. Pfretzscher French bow
I now own a French bow stamped H. R. Pfretzscher, thanks to a package deal I bought from a fellow TB'er. The person I bought it from said he wasn't completely convinced of its authenticity.
Advice appreciated - how to check out if it's real or not would be a good place to start. Were or are there a lot of fakes of this maker? The only thing I can verify is that I'm just learning to bow French, and I sound better with this bow already than I do my usual German bow. And I'm not complaining about that fact. :)
Thanks in advance.
They should be able to tell you:
Thanks - that's the shop where this bass apparently came from, and perhaps the bow as well.
I'll call them today.
Good luck with your new bow. Sounds like a beauty.
Thanks, Nick. The bass is at the luthier, getting a new endpin, the sound post adjusted or replaced, the neck planed, and the like, all things I expected and I'm looking forward to getting it back later today or tomorrow.
Thanks for the bow info. I will ask and report back.
Update - no reply to my emails sent to the address Nick gave.
Interestingly for me, it turns out that my German bow, on loan to me from a friend, is also the same brand.
My teacher looked at this French bow, played it, and told me it was fine for me. His comment was that I could probably pay $500 and not end up with a better bow than this one, so I will stick with it for now, its mysterious origins not withstanding. :)
