Question Kolstein Soft Rosin help

I receive a cake of Kolstein soft rosin with my Ken Smith Tecchler German bow.

I really like the rosin. I find the sound is much smoother than Carlson, which I have used for years. I find I can pull a lot of sound out of my bass without the effort needed with Carlson. Plus, there is almost no powder buildup and I only need one application per concert/ day of practicing (sometimes no application is needed at all).

But the stuff is so incredibly soft! It is stuck in the cardboard container and I can't get it out. I was thinking of cutting the cardboard off bit by bit as needed but the lid really sticks to it, as well. I tried lining the little tube with tin foil but bits of foil is now embedded in the surface.

I was thinking of finding a small plastic container for it, but I think the rosin wound get stuck in there, too.

What do you folks so with your Kolstein soft rosin?

Cool Too Soft?

I put it in the Fridge until I need it as I have at the office. I have an old cake here at home i use to practice with and it isn't too soft anymore. I think when they are new, the soft and all weather rosin melts easily in the heat. Put it in the fridge and pull it out as needed. When you come home from playing, put it back in. I have to pull the lid off mine as well at it was from the exact same batch/box as yours. Not to worry, it happens!

Thanks for the mention and glad to hear such an accomplished player enjoying our Bow.

Hi folks:
My previous dog fell asleep on a cake of Carllson. It melted, and stuck to his skin and fur, and was a bugger to get off. Had to cut his hair off right to the skin.
My present dog ate a cake of Kolstein soft. He couldn't digest it, but thankfully puked it up. I found it in the car. I didn't know what it was at first.

cheers,

Jack

So what you are saying is that the Carlson wasn't good enough for your Dog to eat? Ok, that makes sence..lol

I left Carlson in my (empty) bowcase at a gig, sitting by a sunny window. Came back to a pocket full of goo... Also ruined my livingroom carpet by dropping the cake, then forgetting about it while the sun rotated in...

Thats hysterical, probably though it looked like a big
chewy piece of candy

My dog is a small-legged shaggy goat too, seems like
she'll eat ANY thing she can get in her mouth. Course
she regretted that the last time I gave her a hunk of
Chicken Vindaloo

Totally off topic, but my German Shepherd once ate an entire unattended beef summer sausage (probably 7 or 8 lbs), including the plastic wrapper. Should've killed her, but she showed absolutely no signs of discomfort.

Kolstein soft rosin

I bought a cake of Kolstein soft about 4 years ago, and it was the best rosin I had ever used. I got so excited that I ordered 3 more cakes immediately, and when they arrived I found to my horror that they had the consistency of molasses. They ruin any bow hair they come in contact. I've had them drying out in my closet for years, hoping to someday get some use out of them.

i also keep my kolstein in the fridge. i took it out of the paper box and put it in a small tupperware box. that works fine and the rosin doesn't stick to the plastic. when the kolstein sticks to the paper of the original box - squeezing the sides might help to get it out. but make sure you put it in the fridge before.

Barrie Kolstein gave me a cake when I bought a bass there years ago. It also ruined bow hair for me. Over time globules of the stuff started to coat the hair.
