I have talked a bit here about my shorter Bazin bow in the past (do a search on Bazin' if you like) but this thread is about me actually going thru with using it for a Concert.
Although I have used it here and there, I have never used it for a major concert before. Last year while rehearsing Beethoven's 9th I used the Bazin all the way up until the second half of the Dress rehearsal and then switched to my Balint Bow which is 10 grams heavier.
Last week before the first run-thru rehearsal I tested a bunch of my Bows to match up with my Cornerless Bass. The Bow I kept coming back to for playability and sound combined was the shorter/lighter C.N. Bazin bow (136 gr. with 1.5" shorter hair length). One of my Lipkins bows (144gr with rubber grip) was close to it but for some of the bowings needed for the
program we were doing, the Bazin just played easier. The easiest playing Bow by just a few hairs was my new Lipkins Sartory model but the 100+ year old Bazin just had more sound and played almost as good.
This was the first time I stuck with my instinct and used the shorter bow. From now on when I will bring two bows out, one of them will be the Bazin to at least see if it's the right stick for the job.
