I thought arco was going to take forever, until I lost that rosin and replaced it with Pops. After one application, I was playing notes much more easily.
So I vote for Pops!

Where do you get Austrian rosin, Austria? Haven't seen any lately. Is that a brand or the country of origin? Send me a cake and I'll try it against the Oak stuff and let you know what I think, since you seem to be interested.

I had a feeling it might have been...
sorry uncle T for underestimating your wisdom...
let's see if he comes back or not.
In the mean time,
I like carlssons in warmer weather, but at times it doesn't grab as much as I would like it to.
I kinda like nymans but the cake I have is old. would like to try a fresh cake.
I'm liking kolstein all-weather at the moment.
Interestingly, I've never tried pops.
I've never tried the Austrian rosin either. |

Maybe I didn't get a very new cake, or maybe it's because I started using it in the winter, but after a few weeks I went back to Pop's, mostly for the stickiness. The Carlsson just didn't grab like Pop's does for me.

I forgot Thomastik, and the Rosin, I forgot the name, I'm in another country away from my Bass( Earning a kind of honest living), so I can't se it. But.. Its in a green Pot, Its made in Austria, and has a really cool European brown bear playing a Bass on it, Petz I think, seems to work. Well anything Germanic works efficiently.... |

If you do a search on Petz, you will find numerous critiques of its' "efficiency". I guess those posts kind of scared me away from trying it. I think someone said it was like "bacon grease on barbed wire".....
So what are the attributes of the Austrian rosin that appeal to you, when you are playing your bass at home and not honestly grubbing abroad?

When I tried it on the Thomastik Spirocores softs and it worked fine, Lovely infact. I know soft strings, I'm a wimp! Then again the ability to crush walnuts in ones hand(Double bass players are reputably supposed to do that), is not a skill that attracts the ladies. Well maybe not the type I try to attract........ |

I use light tension orchestral D'Addarios. These are still holding up fine, but perhaps I'll try the Spiros when these need replacing. These (D'Addarios) are what came on the instrument. It is noteworthy that the tension is higher with a 110 cm mensur than with 105, which is more common. So "soft" or "light" tension is relative depending on mensur.

The soft was just a touch too soft and got a little slick with too much fast playing, that was was solved by a couple swipes of Med.
It ends up being over $50 for the two cakes with shipping as opposed to $5 for Pops but it is really worth it. It smells really nice, too. http://gregorianstrings.com/

If that is where your priorities lie.... then I think you need another forum, rather than this one!!
