Petz vs. Jade Rosin

I'm trying to decide on a new brand of rosin. I've tried Pop's and Kolstein all weather, but didn't like either (Pop's was too sticky and Kolstein was way too soft- doesn't even grip the strings!)
After talking to some people, I'm stuck between Petz and Jade. Not sure which would be best for my climate either (SE Kansas). Any suggestions/opinions?

I wouldn't rule out Kolstein Soft. Many people find it a tad less tacky than Pops when used sparingly. Actually, the same goes for Pops; make sure you're not using too much! Also, check out the Oak rosins from Gaston Brohan's site. I use that, Kolstein Soft, or Pops depending on the time of year, humidity level, stock market curve, latest fashion trend, etc, etc.

I used Pops for about two years and always used it pretty sparingly, but it would just gunk up my bow. After I bought a new bow, I decided to buy new rosin, so that's when I got the Kolstein, but I've tried applying it in so many different fashions and it still hasn't done it for me. My instructor told me that the Kolstein was way too soft, and he uses Petz. Another fellow bassist told me that she uses Jade for both cello and bass. Everyone else I know uses Pops, but like I said before, it just didn't do it for me.

I use Jade and it's great - as long as you don't mind a lot of powder - its very light, not gummy. I also had a cake of the new Petz Premium, which thought was terrific (but then left the cake in the car one day... oops)

In my case it depends on what I need. If I need more bite I use Kolstenin all weather, and for solo study I use Petz nº3 ( I have recently discover it).
It also depends in the climate. Here where I leave (Tenerife, Canary islands, 700 mts) the humidity is too, too high; 70%-80% outside. In that humid days I use the Petz rosin, because I think it´s drier than the other rosins. Is that true??

Saludos..

I like the jade much better than the petz. I also sometimes will use a few swipes of carlsson or nyman with a swipe of pops.

I've used Petz in various degrees of hardness for years. It isn't very popular on TB, I've discovered. But I like it until I find something better?
But rosin is basically pine sap, and I restore used or broken cakes by lining a large shot glass with tin foil and sticking it in my gas oven for however long it takes the pilot light to do its work. When it gets soft enough, I press and squeeze it into a cake shape already in its foil wrapper.
P.S. I use a similar method to make home-made yogurt, but it don't bow too good

I got another cake of Petz premium and it's a very clear, grippy rosin. I like it a lot - not at all like the old Petz in the green cans

The "new" Petz I've been using and really liking is #4, which isn't clear, but a pale beige/yellow, not brown and brittle as was the older Petz #s 1, 2, and 3. But it, too, comes in a green can.
Until your post today, I thought it was the new "premium" rosin that I had been reading about. . What color is new can and what is written on it. I'd like to try it.
Thanks,
Gerry

Here's what it looks like. What you describe as #4 sounds a lot like it. (I bought mine at Upton)

Mine doesn't look anything like it, round, not hex container. I can't even find the one I have on the Petz rosin sites which are really confusing.
I'll just go with Upton, too. Thanks for the help.
