Question about bow size

O.K., this may be the dumbest question but I feel I have to ask-Now, my bass is 3/4 size and what is the difference between 3/4 and 4/4 size bows? can you use a 4/4 bow with a 3/4 bass? Obviously I do not use the bow exclusively but I am working on that, I am interested if anyone could give me some info-

Thanks

Bow sizes are different than Bass sizes. Bows vary by each maker but unless you are a child, buy a regular bow. I have some measurements on my bow pages so you have to ask me to post them.

Can I post a link to one of my Bow pages or my Bow section?

One other Bass/Bow dealer has measurements but I take it one step further and mention the actual playing length with the hair as you don't play the stick!

Lightbulb the Basics..

Here are just the measurements and specs of the Bows I produce under various brand names of mine;

The French Sartory Models stamped: C.Loveri, Loveri and Napoli.

The German Models are stamped B.Fendt, D.Tecchler and Domenico.

Weight: Averages from 132grams to 146grams
Length of Stick from Tip (not including Screw): 26 3/4" (all models)
Average Playing Length of Hair: 21 1/4" - 21 1/2" (all models)

I like my Bows on the shorter side as the longer ones usually made in Germany of a French model are usually just wrong!

Heres a Bultitude; Model: Master Pernambuco French style Double Bass Bow with Silver Fittings (Octagon Stick)
Weight: 139 Grams
Length of Stick from Tip (not including Screw): 26 inches
Playing Length of Hair: 21 inches

Lipkins; Model: Master Pernambuco French style Double Bass Bow with Silver Fittings (Round Stick)
Weight: 142 Grams (with rubber grip)
Length of Stick from Tip (not including Screw): 26 3/8"
Playing Length of Hair: 211/4"

Eibert Sartory model (German style French but made to my specs); Model: Sartory Style French Pernambuco Double Bass Bow with Sliver Fittings (Octagon Stick)
Weight: 132 Grams (or 146 gr. with heavier Screw supplied for better Spiccato playing)
Length of Stick from Tip (not including Screw): 26 3/4 inches
Playing Length of Hair: 21 3/16 inches

Old old French made in Germany about 70 years ago; Model: Style Pernambuco French Double Bass Bow with Silver Fittings (Round Stick)
Weight: 126 Grams
Length of Stick from Tip (not including Screw): 26 3/8 inches
Playing Length of Hair: 21 3/16 inches

Short C.N.Bazin Bow, Theatre model stick about 100-120 years old; Model: French Theatre Bow in classic Pernambuco w/Butterfly Screw (Raffin Certificate)
Weight: 136 Grams
Length of Stick from Tip (not including Screw): 24 3/4"
Playing Length of Hair: 19 1/2"

This is better I think as it does not advertise my Bows or show links. Just the facts about a few well made Bows. I have another Bultitude now and it is almost the same as the one I posted so he was fairly consistant with that model.

I feel lucky to have found another and like this one at least as much.

My bow, which, in my opinion is one of the best I've played at any price, is a bit on the long side at 28" stick, and 22.5" playable hair length. It weighs in at 142 grams, so weight-wise it's somewhere in the middle of the norm. Although at one time it had a grip, so it originally weighed more than it does now. In my experience, I don't think that the length of the stick or hair is really important, at least within reason. There are so many other factors in how a bow handles that the length really is not an issue. If anything, the size of the frog and the overall height of the frog/stick are a lot more important.
