| | | | Question about new shorter bow I just got a new bow, but it is shorter than most bows I've previously played on. It sounds better, is more balanced, and is not THAT much shorter. Is it "bad" or "wrong" to play on a bow that is not as long as most bows? Should I switch back to longer bows? Does it not matter as long as I can play good? What are the ruels?
Thanks,
Stew

Thanks,
Stew | You like your bow! It works for you! You play better with the bow. That's really all that counts. Enjoy your bow, and sharpen your skills, because the sword fighting might soon begin

French Bows average from about 20 3/4" to 21 1/2" in playing length. My Short Bow is 19 1/2" and is over 100 years old. Many French Bows made in Germany are in the 22" range and in my opinion are too long. Also, with the smaller head the use the sound is weak on the last quarter of the Bow towards the tip. |

My best bow now is a shade shorter than my beginner bow, but plays much better over the whole length. Length is useless if you can't play on it. I think shorter is easier to balance perhaps. If it is working for you that is the most important thing.
Somewhere down the way, I'll try French bows also, and perhaps much shorter German bows. I think "one bow does everything best" might not exist. There is one fellow posting on here who regularly uses about a half dozen different bows.

Also, all bows are too short compared to the violins... |
