I like the Kolstein Ultra, but you have to re-apply fairly often. It doesn't get "gummy" though, so that is nice. I never used to put on enough, being a former Pops user, which can definitely be overapplied. Oh yeah, the all-weather goes on great if you blow hot breath on it a few times first or heat up your bow hair by playing some first.

I bought a cake of Petz #3 when I bought my first bow in 1992. My teahcer said, "This stuff will do. If you learn to produce good tone with this rosin, you'll be head of the game when you step up to a beter rosin."

10 years and hundreds of arco gigs later, I still have the same lump of Petz, though it is about the size of my thumbnail. "Time to do it," I thought.

So I ordered some Carlsson yesterday from Lemur.

What sort of tonal changes might I expect?

I'm also putting off a bow rehair. Maybe sometime before the spring.

Well, the Carlsson came today. First impression, darker and smokier than the Petz #3. Be good with a nice chianti...

Wow, this is some sticky rosin! I only have to use part of my normal bw pressure to get that "pop" at the beginning of a bow stroke. Much more control whe doing fast baroque passages or Mozart spiccati.

I'll need to learn to lighten my touch a little, or it sounds "plastic-y." I probably used too much on my first application.

Goddamn! I didn't think anyone really used that stuff. I always thought telling beginners to use it was some sort of masochistic initiation ritual. Your teacher's a real bastard!

10 years!!!!???????
