Rosin - newb

Hi all,

Today I bought Pop's rosin. That's my first rosin ever. And guess what... I don't know how to use it. There is a plastic container, and inside there is a rosin within a paper "glass". Do I remove the paper?

Please help!

I'm not trolling, I really don't want to destroy the rosin by doing something wrong.

Danko

I think the idea is that you peel a little of the paper back around the edges - then when it has worn down by use, you peel back a little more etc etc.

Greetings!

Pops is very soft so you also have to be careful where you keep the rosin stored. If it gets too hot it will run and conform to the cup...making it difficult to remove.

This is primarily an issue in the summer...don't keep your Pops in the car!

Best regards!

With soft, sticky rosin like Pop's, it's probably a good idea to rosin only in one direction. i.e. start at the frog, make a swipe, lift the hair off the rosin, return to the frog, swipe again, etc. Otherwise, you could break off bowhairs when you stop and change direction due to the bowhair sticking to the rosin cake.

Most (all?) bass rosin is soft enough to require this, in my experience.

Don't over-rosin. Just a few swipes are all that you need.

Don't make the mistake of letting your Pop's rosin container lay on its side or upside-down. It will come out like The Blob. It's okay to put it in your bass bag to/from gigs, but once you get where you're going, get it out of there.

If it gets stuck in the container, you can coax it out by rolling the plastic container between your palms, and then putting the top against your 1st and 2nd finger and the bottom against your thumb, and squeezing. Of course, you need to open the container first.

Ok, thanks all.

I practice with bow almost every day now, and my intonation improved already.

Glad I've listened to advice I've read on talkbass.

Intonation improvement is certainly an advantage when using the bow, but the best reason to use the bow is to charge the strings up to let them to glow at night.

I think most any rosin will melt if you leave it in the car or in your pocket... I know I use Carlson and it definately will. But yeah, if the Poops melts into the plastic cup, have fun getting it out, and then seperating the rosin from the paper. Better yet, get some real rosin, IMO. Pops is a mess.

The first thing I do with pops is completley remove it from the paper and let it take the the shape of the container. It's easy to remove the rosin if you work the can in your hands, and prevents the paper from getting swallowed into the rosin if it ever gets left one it's side.

Anyone familiar with the rosin that comes with an NS electric bass cello? I've never used a bow before and it would appear that the one that come with the bass has no rosin on it at all. I'm not trolling either, just totally clueless.
