Small fracture in Bow Wood!!!

My fairly new bow (8 months), to my disappointment, has a small crack in the of the stick above the frog, right where my thumb goes. It does not appear to be that deep, and I am taking it to the luthier tomorrow. Could this be really bad news?!

Bad news???

Greetings!

Depending on just where the crack is will determine how big the problem is. If the crack is between the mortise and the butt-end of the stick, it can be a fairly serious problem as this portion of the stick is is under quite a bit of tension as the button (screw) uses it to brace against as it pulls the frog back to tighten the hair. If the crack is forward of the mortise, it's not nearly as big of a deal and might not require any action at all.

If the crack is between the mortise and the butt-end, the repair could range from nothing (wait and see) on the one end all the way to drilling out the nipple, bushing the hole, and redrilling...a fairly complex repair but not uncommon.

My guess...without seeing the bow myself...is that it's not going to be a big deal. Since you said it was under your thumb, It sounds to me like it's forward of the mortise.

Good luck and best regards!

Jim
