What to do....

Ive got an old snakewood bass bow which measures 698mm and weighs 146gm. The problem is this, I love the sound in terms of the clarity and depth that this bow gives me, but, It bounces a lot when playing at low dynamics towards the tip. Just wondering what you guys would suggest to be done? The head is quite large so I am wondering whether or not to have some wood shaved off, although I am concerned that this would take away too much weight?

My best German brazilwood bow weighs about the same and is 700mm not including the button. Balance point is the important thing. If you take wood off the tip you will shift the balance point toward the frog which might give you more control. To find the balance point, balance the bow (I know the sounds kind of obvious) on your finger. Then you can compare that to your other bows that work better for you. You can also add weight to the button if it has one of those long buttons by wrapping it with silver wire or adding some other trim at the end. I would try that before removing wood from the tip. If you do decide to remove wood, it might be best to find a bow maker to do that for you.

When i first started using my bow, it skipped a good bit too if I tried to play out close to the tip. But it just rips on spicatto! So it is kind of a trade-off I think. Over time, I have gotten it pretty well under control, but I don't use other bows except as back-up.
