Why is a frog called a ... frog???

Wondering if there's a good reason?

If not, is there a wit out there with an idea?

From the side, it looks like a frog that's sitting down...kindof...maybe...?

I'll take a stab at it: because the earliest examples were attached to the stick with ribbets.

I had a violin teacher who explained this to me by loosening the bow all the way that the screw comes out. and then asking the question "Do you know why this is called a frog?" and going "BECAUSE IT JUMPS!" while letting the frog fly from the little socket.

i'll never forget that.

Well, in Spanish is "nuez" (nut as in walnut) and in French it is "hausse" (something to regulate height or angle)

I've thought about that from time to time. But its nice to know that everyone has such a nice sense of humor about it or it might be enough to make me croak.

Actually, I once did try to find out why that part is called the frog, but to no avail. Its just one of the great mysteries of life.

Don't confuse him Paul, and don't try to turn my thread into a smutty one.

I was talking about the FROG, the black thing with the mother-of-pearl stud through the side, a silver ring around the end and attached to a bunch of long white hairs, that you move back and forth to get a different degree of springiness.

Look who's talkin' Matthew.....we were both just talkin' frog in the finest sense of the word, as it applies to my German and Ed's French.
It was YOU, who has stepped over that nasty AND tasteless line in talkin' that there marital aid **** I quoted up there, up above there.
As usual, Ed and Myownself pray for you daily.
