410 cab wheels on or off

Sign in to disble this ad
Currently I am using a mesa road ready 410 at our rehearsal studio. I left the wheels on for a while so it would be easy to move. I recently took the wheels off. I swear it sounds better with the wheels off.
I put the wheels back on to move it and was disappointed in the sound. So of course I took the wheels off again. I swear it sounds better with the wheels off.
Does this make sense? Or is it just me?

Do the wheels raise it off the ground?

Yes. The wheels bring it about 4 to 6 inches off the floor.

Any time you couple a cab to the deck it will have a deeper sound. But at a distance it will sound better off the ground typically.

Wheel it in, flip it on its side, play. Turn it back up when your finished and wheel it out. If the casters rattle take them off. When your more than 8 feet away from the cab it won't make abit of difference to the ear. I have a rule that if it doesn't have wheels it stays home. Save the back!!!! Doc

Without wheels you'll have more bass and about 3db more SPL. This can be a desired effect or an annoying one, depending on the room and your own preferences. Try both and see what you like better...

Wow! This is interesting! I'm fairly new to the bass world. About two years now. Been playing guitar and drums for over twenty years. Never got seriously into bass till two years ago. Its so different! Its like playing drums and guitar at the same time! And I love the power! Bass knowledge is incredible. I have a lot to learn. I always get compliments though. Thanks for sharing some power (knowledge).

Whenever I've used a standard configured 410 cabinet I always popped the two rear casters out to give the cab a little front angle up towards my ears, helped me to hear the mids and highs that would have blown past my knees otherwise.

I'd like to do that, but due to some of the postage stamp sized stages we play on, my 4x10 supports the pa and board...

I can certainly relate to that...

A little over a year ago I went to two 210 cabinets stacked as a vertical 410...NO problem with hearing myself now!

I try to keep my cabinet up, If I'm playing a gig with a PA on sticks, I don't want to be too boomy or too loud so it's tilted back a bit or on a chair or stand. If I'm playing through a PA it's up where I can hear or if I'm far enough in front I don't worry too much.
