adding additional speakers to your P.A.

I have a question regarding adding more speakers to your P.A.
right now my band is working with a powered mixer it has 8 channels and only allows four 1/4 inch outputs for speakers. we are already using 2 for stage speakers and 2 for monitors, we want more low end and want to add either two 1x18's or one 2x18 (powered or passive{would have its own amp}) to help with the bass guitar and kick drum. but how could we send a signal to those speakers? I read an article in the latest musicians friend magazine about adding powered sub where the process was- plug it directly into an auxilary out mut and then turn everything down for each channel except for the bass and kick drum (this is for a larger mixing board). our powered mixer does not have that feature. any ideas of how to send a signal with out damaging the speakers?

If your mixer has an effects loop you may want to look into a crossover to put into it. Send your mix to the crossover via the effects send, run the highs back to the mixer effects return, and send the lows to your subs. Crossovers can be had for relatively cheap.

What mixer is it? Most powered mixers have a line level out for the mains that you can use.

^This.

On our small (passive mixers though) rigs we used either Mono or Group out for that purpose.
