Do you also have to have an audience when you go skiing, or play tennis or racquetball or whatever else your hobbies might be?

Good point, but you usually have a buddy or buddies that accompany you while you play these sports.

Same thing applies to music. You need to find other musicians to play with you, and most musicians eventually want to play for an audience other than themselves.

The OP was explaining his difficulty in finding a band to play with, because he's so reluctant to play out...even though he's never done it.

My 2 cents: give it a shot first..you might like it!

If I couldn't play live, I'd give up altogether.

I don't see the point of practicing, learning songs, writing and recording, without reaching the pinnacle and going out there and playng to an audience - NOTHING ELSE even vaguely compares.

It also teaches you invaluable lessons in playing technique, and whether your "Opus Magnum" is really as good as you thought it was.

The reason why you play is only important to you, doesn't matter what anybody else thinks. But, IME, playing what you like in front of enthusiastic listeners can be a most fulfilling experience, lots of people create a palplable vibe, this is real energy that can project your playing to new levels where you haven't been or thought you couldn't get to.

Be careful, it's seriously addictive and I've had an unbreakable habit for years.

I've had periods when I've played very little and guess why? No band to play with or gigs at those times. I lose the interest to play bass if I don't have gigs upcoming or a band to play with. Playing bass alone is pretty boring, and because of that I practice very little. It's playing live with a bunch or friends (and very talented musicians) that gives me the motivation to play and get better.

I rather play guitar and/or sing when I play alone.

Just as your bass doesn't exist unless we see a picture of it you don't exist as a performer until you hit the stage?

I am also shy, but on stage I - feed off the crowd, and transform into a BONEKRUSHING
Machine. LOL - Seriously though, I do get Quite Manic @ TIMES - have to make sure I take my meds, or I will freak out. I love to be on stage - playing live is my Drug.
