Play Free Bird. Take turns playing a 5 minute solo.

Then play Whipping Post.

I play for fun. people dance we have more fun. If you stop and they leave it becomes an amazingly underpaid job.

We have them them out there we keep going. We need a bathroom break we take it. Anyone who leaves the stage is wide open for disparaging remarks from the band and the crowd joins in. Not really a deal, and the crowd gets a kick out of us bagging on ea other.

Yep. I love it when you're packing up, exhausted after 4 sets, the dj's going, and then a wedding party arrives to drunkenly berate you for not playing "ONE MORE SONG!!!"

4 or 5 set bar gigs are 45 / 15's or 40/20's. PERIOD. IF you need more than that, you need to get another guy.

If the band or the bar is so lame that they can't hold a crowd over a 15-20 minute break without the room emptying...I need another band or bar.

I'd rather sit at home and jam with the PC or at a buddies house for fun than let someone beat me to death for 4 hours.

If I wanted to work that friggan hard, I'd go out and get real job with a real paycheck.

Music should be fun. I doubt if anyone here is in it becuase it pay SO much money. I see more people, and especially bassists, with a chair to get through sets.

Jack Bruce has a chair last time I caught his act.

The Beatles, the Allmans were young when they were pulling the long nights. Jaco's whole caeer was under 30.

An hour set is hard when you're sixty.

Another Nashville guy here, so pretty much every gig in town is 4 hours straight though. In one of the bands, the singer is a good enough guitarist, bass player, and drummer to give everyone a one song break. The other band has no such luck, I'm all the way through until the last song of the night. I run for the bathroom (or alley if they bar is too crowded...) if there is a song with a long no-bass section, like "Your Love" by The Outfield.

The singers always have someone in the band who can sing a few BTW, I don't know many people who can sing 4 hours straight through.
